Ramen restaurant at Amsa Station: karai ramen and tonkatsu, Haekbap

In short

Haekbap Amsa (핵밥 암사점) is a fusion Japanese restaurant on the 2nd floor of a building near Amsa Station in Gangdong, Seoul, serving rice bowls, ramen, soba, udon and tonkatsu. The writer had the Haekbap karai ramen set, a spicy ramen served with 5 pieces of karaage and grilled rice cake drizzled with honey, while a companion ordered the Western-style giant tonkatsu; both portions were generous. Verdict: Haekbap Amsa is a good pick for a filling, good-value ramen and tonkatsu meal near Amsa Station.

Haekbap Amsa menu

Haekbap is a restaurant that keeps the "core" (haek) of rice, and it sells many kinds of Japanese food, including home-style (Gajeong) rice bowls, ramen, soba and udon. I really love noodle dishes, so I was happy to see so many kinds of ramen here.

Haekbap karai ramen set: flavor and portion

Haekbap karai ramen set served with karaage

The karai ramen set at Haekbap Amsa comes with five pieces of karaage (Japanese fried chicken) and a generous bowl of karai ramen. I ordered the karai ramen set 🔥 Even at a glance, the portion is really generous.

Karai ramen topped with soft-boiled egg and chashu

The karai ramen comes with a soft-boiled egg, assorted vegetables and chashu (braised pork slices), so one bowl alone is filling. The broth is deep and spicy, and I couldn't stop my chopsticks 🥢

The noodles were cooked just right, neither too firm nor too soft, exactly how I like them 🪽

A taste of Fukuoka ramen in Japan: is it very spicy?

Haekbap's karai ramen isn't too hot, just pleasantly stimulating, so I think even people who don't handle spice well can enjoy it 💛 "Karai" means "spicy" in Japanese. I wrapped a pile of ramen in a slice of chashu and took a bite, and it tasted like being in Japan 🍜🥢

The honey grilled rice cake and karaage in the set

The karai ramen set also comes with grilled tteok (rice cake), drizzled with honey, which makes a great side ✨ It's chewy and I just wanted to keep eating it.

Five pieces of karaage served with the set

The karaage comes as 5 pieces, crispy outside and juicy inside, and dipped in the sauce they give you, it goes so well with the ramen. If you're ordering ramen, definitely switch to the set 🪄 The karaage is something you can't give up 🍗

How big is the Western-style giant tonkatsu at Haekbap Amsa?

True to its name, the Western-style giant tonkatsu (breaded pork cutlet) at Haekbap Amsa is huge! My tonkatsu-loving Namgu ordered it, and the moment it hit the table, the smell of freshly fried cutlet made my mouth water 🤤 I really love this kind of Western-style tonkatsu.

The giant tonkatsu comes with rice, and the rice can be refilled, so just ask if you need more. When the cutlet was cut, it made a crunchy sound and I was so eager to taste it. I told Namgu to hurry up and cut it for me several times 🤫

It's generously topped with sauce, with a nostalgic tonkatsu taste I hadn't had in a long time 💛 Maybe because it was freshly fried, it was warm, crispy outside and juicy inside, the kind you keep reaching for 🥢 The portion is really big too, perfect for a hearty meal!

How about Haekbap Amsa for a good-value meal near Amsa Station?

Besides ramen and tonkatsu, Haekbap Amsa sells rice bowls, udon and cold soba (buckwheat noodles), which is perfect for summer. If you want a good-value meal, I recommend Haekbap in Amsa ✨
