Fine dining in Mangwon: green tea sparkling & sesame arancini, Noju

In short

Noju (NOJU) is an Italian-style course restaurant on the second floor of a building near Exit 2 of Mangwon Station in Mapo, Seoul. On a third visit, the writer paired the Noju Signature Lunch (55,000 won per person, per the menu) with a non-alcoholic sparkling wine made from green tea leaves and apple, and named the sesame oil arancini as the favorite dish at Noju. For a stylish lunch without alcohol, the Noju Signature Lunch was a satisfying choice.

Let me introduce Noju (NOJU), a fine dining spot in Mangwon that's great when you want a special lunch.

This is already my third visit! Fine dining often feels pricey and hard to just walk into, but at Noju you can enjoy a multi-dish course even at the ₩30,000 level, so I'd recommend it to anyone looking for good-value fine dining. This time I wanted a change of pace and a wider range of dishes, so I had the Noju Signature Lunch course together with a non-alcoholic sparkling wine. From the atmosphere to the varied menu, I was happy with it, so here's the story!

Where is Noju and what are its opening hours?

Noju is at 56 Donggyo-ro 9-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, on the second floor, about a 2–3 minute walk from Exit 2 of Mangwon Station. It's open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., with a break from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m., and there's no parking.

It's on the second floor of the Mangwon Makguksu building, so it's also convenient as part of a date in Mangwon.

What is the atmosphere like at Noju in Mangwon?

Noju is an Italian-style course restaurant tucked into a Mangwon side street.

Rather than a flashy or intimidating vibe, Noju's charm is that it's calm and lets you focus on the meal and enjoy the courses. It seems well suited to dates, birthdays, anniversaries, or a special lunch with friends. I also liked that it's close to Mangwon Station, so it's easy to reach.

Fine dining often ends up reserved for special days because of the price, but with Noju's lunch course you can taste a number of dishes at a relatively reasonable price. So if you're looking for good-value fine dining in Mangwon, it's worth a look.

What are the price and dishes of the Noju Signature Lunch?

What I ordered was the Noju Signature Lunch.

The Noju Signature Lunch is ₩55,000 per person per the menu, and it's a course running from bread through an appetizer, pasta, gnocchi, a meat dish and dessert.

🥖 Bread – Yuja Ricotta / Focaccia

This bread dish opens the Signature Lunch. The focaccia with yuja (citron) ricotta whets your appetite lightly as the course begins.

🍃 Welcome to NOJU – Beet / Endive

This welcome dish shows you Noju's first impression. Before the main course begins, you get a combination of different ingredients. The beet bite in particular was fresh and refreshing, a perfect appetizer.

🍖 Jambon – Zucchini / Jambon / Emmental

Jambon (lightly cured ham), zucchini and Emmental cheese come together here. The mild cheese and the salty jambon go so well together that I wanted to eat it again.

🍙 Arancini – Parmigiano / White Ragù / Sesame Oil

This course brings arancini, the Italian fried rice ball. Combining flavors like white ragù and sesame oil, it made me expect something both familiar and new.

My favorite dish at Noju!! Unlike elsewhere, it's seasoned with sesame oil, which doubles the nuttiness. So good.

🌊 Uni – Sea Urchin / Anchovy / Chitarra

This dish has sea urchin, anchovy and chitarra (square-cut spaghetti). If you like courses that include pasta, it's a lineup worth watching for.

🥔 Signature Gnocchi – Truffle / Potato

This is Noju's signature gnocchi. Potato gnocchi with the aroma of truffle gives it a rich, upscale flavor. Sliced truffle mushrooms come on top, and eating them together with the gnocchi spreads the flavor through your mouth.

🍖 Pork – Pork Jowl (Gabrisal) / Jalapeño

The main of the Signature Lunch is pork jowl (gabrisal) with jalapeño. It was a thick pork jowl steak, and I liked that it was tender with nothing tough. It's already seasoned, so on its own you can taste the meat itself, and when it gets a little rich, topping it with jalapeño feels like eating a refreshing different dish.

🍨 Ice Cream – Walnut Ice Cream

The Signature Lunch ends with walnut ice cream. After all those courses, it's a nice sweet way to cleanse the palate.

Does non-alcoholic sparkling wine go with Noju's lunch course?

The drink I chose with the course on this visit was a non-alcoholic sparkling wine. It's made only from green tea leaves picked on May 5, with apple added for a touch of sweetness, they say.

At fine dining, it's not just the food; what you drink with it also completes the mood of the meal, right? Sipping from the glass and taking the course slowly felt different from an ordinary lunch. Even if you don't drink alcohol, it was nice to have a non-alcoholic option for enjoying that sparkling-wine atmosphere.

The non-alcoholic sparkling wine I had today had the sweetness of apple added to the green tea leaves, so it paired easily with the dishes.

Why Noju is appealing as good-value fine dining

What I find appealing about Noju is that you can enjoy many different dishes in order in a single meal.

Course meal at Noju in Mangwon
  • First, a course at the ₩50,000 level: The Noju Signature Lunch is ₩55,000 per the menu, and you get the fun of a course, which is different from ordering single dishes one by one.
  • Second, a menu using varied ingredients: From yuja ricotta and focaccia to arancini, uni, truffle gnocchi, pork jowl and walnut ice cream, you experience many kinds of food.
  • Third, a stylish lunch date: You can enjoy a course in Mangwon without traveling far, so it's worth considering for a date or an anniversary meal.
  • Fourth, a menu that changes with the seasons: The dishes shift a little each season with seasonal ingredients and mood, so it's a place I want to go back to every time. I'm curious what will come out next!

Thinking about these points, Noju seems like a good choice even for people who want to try fine dining for the first time.

Overall review of the Noju Signature Lunch in Mangwon

The Signature Lunch I had at Noju in Mangwon was a course that suits you when you want a lunch that's a little more relaxed and special than usual.
