Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch is a sundaeguk (Korean blood sausage soup) restaurant on Seosuwon-ro in Omokcheon, Suwon. A regular couple came for a lunch date and ordered the spicy sundaeguk (₩12,000) loaded with perilla seed powder and the sundae-only cypress steamer set (₩18,000), which comes with boiled pork, sundae and galbi dumplings; the peppery broth and juicy galbi dumplings stood out most. If you want both a spicy hangover broth and a mild gukbap, add the cypress steamer set at Gohyangok.

Omokcheon bagel café, Suwon: Deep Choco with kids, Orange Bagel

Orange Bagel is a large New York-style bagel café in Omokcheon-dong (Gosaek-dong), Gwonseon-gu, Suwon. A local regular took her kids to Orange Bagel to compare the Deep Choco Bagel (6,300 won) with the trendy choco baguette, along with the Corn Bagel (6,800 won), the Bacon Egg Mayo Bagel (8,500 won) and a chocolate latte. Verdict: the chewy, fudgy Deep Choco Bagel at Orange Bagel beats the crunchy choco baguette.

Ingye-dong cutlet spot, DIY cutlet burger & gopdori dip: Gyewondang

Gyewondang Ingye Branch (계원당 인계점) is a retro, wood-toned Western-style cutlet and gopdori set-meal restaurant in Ingye-dong, Suwon, near Suwon City Hall Station. After missing a café's last order on a date, the blogger and her husband ordered the Gyewon set and the gopdori set (spicy braised chicken with beef intestines) for an early dinner. They tucked cutlets into hot dog buns for DIY cutlet burgers and dipped them in the gopdori broth. Gyewondang Ingye Branch is a good pick for an Ingye-dong date meal when you want hearty cutlets and a spicy gopdori stew in one sitting.

Crispy mentaiko gyoza at a Suwon Station teppanyaki spot: Jojo

Jojo AK Plaza Suwon (죠죠) is a teppanyaki Japanese restaurant in the B1 food court of AK Plaza at Suwon Station, serving yakisoba, okonomiyaki and mentaiko gyoza (pollock roe dumplings). The writer came craving yakisoba and ordered the yakisoba and mentaiko gyoza set, but the crisp-outside, tender-inside gyoza filled with meat and pollock roe impressed more than the springy, smoky noodles. Verdict: at Jojo, pick a set that includes the mentaiko gyoza over a single dish.

Suwon Station Chinese restaurant for college friends: Mirim Yangjang

Mirim Yangjang Time Villas Suwon Branch is a newly opened Peking duck restaurant in the 3rd-floor Dining Square of Time Villas at Suwon Station. Two college friends ordered half a Peking duck and fried rice by QR code at Mirim Yangjang. The duck was moist with no gamey smell, and the fried rice was fluffy with a smoky wok aroma. For two women, half a Peking duck plus one fried rice is just the right amount.

Sundaeguk lunch near Gosaek Industrial Complex, Suwon: Gohyangok

Gohyangok Spicy Sundaeguk Suwon Omokcheon Branch is a sundaeguk (Korean sausage soup) restaurant on Seosuwon-ro in Omokcheon-dong, Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, that uses abai sundae, a meat-filled Korean sausage. The writer, who went with her abai sundae-loving husband, waited for a table at weekday lunch and ordered spicy sundaeguk, plain sundaeguk and cypress-steamed abai sundae, finding the pre-seasoned spicy broth pleasantly fiery and the meat and sausage generous. For fans of meat-filled sundae, the spicy sundaeguk and cypress-steamed abai sundae combo at Gohyangok Omokcheon Branch is a sure bet.

Suwon Hommaesil family hot pot lunch after a movie: Ok Doenjang

Ok Doenjang Suwon Hommaesil Branch is a Korean restaurant specializing in doenjang (soybean paste) hot pot, on the first floor of the Lotte Cinema building in Hommaesil, Suwon. After a movie with the kids, the blogger ordered beef belly doenjang hot pot for 3 and kongguksu (cold soybean noodle soup); the 3 servings came split into two pots of 2 servings and 1 serving, and the doenjang broth was deep, rich and salty. Ok Doenjang is a good choice for a filling family lunch after a film, with no parking worries.

Hwaseong Japanese food: wasabi yakitori-don & sukiyaki, Sindong Lab

Sindong Lab Hwaseong Bongdam Branch is a Japanese set-meal restaurant on Wau-ro in Bongdam-eup, Hwaseong, near the Yunggeolleung royal tombs. On a friend's recommendation, the writer, her husband and their kids shared the sukiyaki set, the mazesoba set and the yakitori-don, along with omija tea and soup before the meal and free self-serve ice cream. The verdict: the yakitori-don, charcoal-scented chicken topped with wasabi, is the dish the writer recommends most strongly.

Suwon hotpot restaurant for a gopchang-daechang combo: Horangigul

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon is a gopchang (beef small intestine) and daechang (beef large intestine) hotpot restaurant in the third-floor food court of Timevillas, the former Lotte Mall connected to Suwon Station. After many visits with neighborhood friends, the writer shared the gopchang + daechang hotpot (19,500 won) with her husband and found the broth much richer and oilier than Horangigul's gopchang-only hotpot. For a deep broth and generous gopchang and daechang, Horangigul is a hotpot spot at Suwon Station worth returning to.

1.5-hour Jeju indoor theme park stop before dinner: Theme Park Toon

Theme Park Toon is an indoor, hands-on comic and webtoon exhibition inside the Arboretum Theme Park on Eunsu-gil in Jeju City. On a summer family trip, the writer filled the time before a dinner reservation with a brother and sister, spending about 1.5 hours going from the 3rd floor down to the 2nd to enjoy AI cartoon photos, motion-recognition media, the Bread Barbershop photo zone and the King Kong game zone. Theme Park Toon is a good Jeju City indoor attraction where kids can escape the midsummer heat and stay active.

Large Suwon bagel café with Big Bird Sparkling soda: Orange Bagel

Orange Bagel is a large American-vintage bagel bakery café on Omokcheon-ro in Gwonseon-gu, Suwon, near Gosaek-dong and Omokcheon-dong. On an October weekend, the writer and her husband ordered pepperoni, potato and crab-and-shrimp bagels, a first-ever Laugen butter bagel (6,900 won) and Big Bird Sparkling (7,000 won), a drink commemorating Suwon Samsung Bluewings, then packed the leftover bagels in an orange box to share with their kids at home. With a roomy parking lot, a Halloween photo zone and a richly buttery Laugen butter bagel, Orange Bagel is a solid pick for a group meetup or date in Suwon.

Jeju Dongmun Market oranda shop: garlic oranda and food truck dinner

Cheongchuni Oranda Dongmun Market Main Branch Tapdong is a handmade oranda (crunchy puffed-grain snack bar) and gwajul (Jeju rice cracker) shop inside Dongmun Traditional Market in Jeju. On a chance stop on the way home from work, the writer bought manong (garlic) oranda, a chocolate donut oranda and a 10-piece yuzu gwajul set mixing white rice, brown rice and buckwheat for 10,000 won, then ate them with a dinner from the market food trucks. Cheongchuni Oranda's manong oranda tastes like garlic bread without any greasiness, making it a Jeju souvenir worth recommending.
