Hapjeong mugwort cake café with decaf americano: Naemyeonui Balgyeon
In short
Naemyeonui Balgyeon (내면의 발견) is a large, atmospheric café between Hapjeong Station and Mangwon Station on Woldeukeopbuk-ro 5-gil in Mapo, Seoul. At Naemyeonui Balgyeon the writer ordered a decaf americano (5,500 won) and an Ipchun mugwort cake (9,000 won), then explored the ground floor with moss, stones and a water channel, the sunlit second floor and the rooftop. For a quiet, spacious café to rest in near Hongdae, Naemyeonui Balgyeon is a good fit.

Today I'm sharing my visit to Naemyeonui Balgyeon (내면의 발견), a moody café that's great for spending a quiet while between Hongdae and Hapjeong. Lots of Hongdae cafés are crowded and bustling, so I'd been looking for somewhere calmer, and true to its name, this place was perfect for taking a break and having some time to myself.
Where is Naemyeonui Balgyeon, and what are the hours and parking?
Naemyeonui Balgyeon is at 53 Woldeukeopbuk-ro 5-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul, and it's open Mon–Fri 12:00–19:00 and Sat–Sun 12:00–20:00. There's parking for about 3–4 cars in front of the café.

It sits roughly halfway between Hapjeong Station and Mangwon Station, so it's easy to reach on foot, and it's not too far from Hongdae either, so you can even stroll over. Best of all, it's a café with parking near Hongdae, which is a real plus.
What does the outside of Naemyeonui Balgyeon look like?
From the outside, Naemyeonui Balgyeon feels less like an ordinary café and more like a small gallery or exhibition space. The moment you step through the entrance, the atmosphere is full of mood, and just like the name ("Discovery of the Inner Self"), there are healing touches everywhere. There were so many good photo spots that I kept reaching for my camera.

What's on the menu? Filter coffee, decaf and Korean melon bingsu
Naemyeonui Balgyeon has a wide range of specialty beans and filter coffees, so coffee lovers will be happy here.

Desserts are available too, and this day I ordered a decaf americano and a mugwort cake. I usually drink coffee even late in the day, so I was glad to see decaf on the menu.

Check the photo above for the drink menu, and see below for how the desserts look ❤️ It's summer, so they were selling Korean melon (chamoe) bingsu (shaved ice) too.

How is each floor of Naemyeonui Balgyeon different?
Every floor of Naemyeonui Balgyeon is laid out differently! It felt less like a place to just drink coffee and more like a place to have an experience.
Ground floor: a small forest of moss, stone and flowing water

The ground floor has a space where moss, stones and a small water channel come together, and it honestly felt like walking through a tiny forest. With the gentle sound of water and the nature-inspired interior, I briefly forgot I was in the middle of the city.

There are also comforting phrases written on the walls here and there, and it was fun to read them one by one over coffee.

Second floor and rooftop: natural light, bookshelves and sofas
Head up to the second floor and the mood changes again. The natural light and green views through the big windows were really pretty, and the area with bookshelves and sofas looked great for reading alone or working on a laptop.
I also liked that many people were spending time quietly, so the whole place kept a calm atmosphere. There's a rooftop too, and on a nice day it's the perfect spot to carry up a cup of coffee and catch some breeze.

How do the Ipchun mugwort cake and decaf americano taste?
What I ordered at Naemyeonui Balgyeon was the Ipchun mugwort cake (₩9,000) and a decaf americano (₩5,500). The decaf wasn't flat at all, and I liked that the mugwort cake wasn't too sweet.
- Ipchun mugwort cake ₩9,000
- Decaf americano ₩5,500

The decaf americano had almost none of that flat taste you usually get with decaf coffee. It was clean with a subtle aroma that really came through, and the acidity wasn't excessive, so it's the kind of cup anyone can drink comfortably.

The mugwort cake I ordered with it had a gentle mugwort aroma that rises up naturally, and it wasn't too sweet, which I liked. The dense yet moist texture was impressive, and since the mugwort flavor isn't strong, I think even people who don't usually like mugwort desserts could enjoy it.

Eaten with the clean decaf americano, neither overpowered the other and they went so well together, which made it even tastier haha

Mugwort cream and red bean together? So good!
Verdict: a quiet, large café near Hongdae and Hapjeong?
If you're looking for a quiet, spacious café near Hongdae and Hapjeong, I really recommend Naemyeonui Balgyeon. You can take photos in a pretty space, and the nature-filled interior makes it a lovely place to rest for a while.
The coffee was satisfying and the dessert was well made too, so next time I'd like to try the filter coffee. If you want to slip out of noisy Hongdae and have a relaxed time, I recommend paying a visit.
