Long-hair hippie perm with curl test at Seongsu hair salon Toni&Guy

In short

Toni&Guy Seongsu is a hair salon in Seongdong, Seoul, a 2-minute walk from Exit 7 of Ttukseom Station. Stylist Sangyeon gave a hippie perm on long hair, running a curl test on a small section of hair before the full perm and then demonstrating how to revive the curls at home with a hair dryer diffuser. The curls at Toni&Guy Seongsu set evenly from roots to ends, so the finished result was worth the visit.

Toni&Guy Seongsu

I got a hippie perm and the curls came out evenly from roots to ends — it looked really pretty overall. Instead of jumping straight into the full service, they first ran a curl test to see how the curl would actually turn out before starting on the whole head. They also kept checking the curl shape midway through and adjusting it to look even better, which showed how carefully they were paying attention.

I've always struggled with the fact that a perm looks different once you style it yourself at home compared to fresh out of the salon. So it was great that they showed me exactly how to bring the curls back to life at home using a diffuser attachment on a hair dryer. The consultation was thorough too — they didn't just look at the style I wanted, but also considered my face shape and body type to figure out what would suit me best.

Weekday and weekend hours are different, and Mondays are closed, so just check the schedule before booking.

Walking from Ttukseom Station Exit 7 to the ivory building

This Ttukseom Station hair salon is close enough to Exit 7 to walk to easily. It occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of an ivory-colored building.

Inside Toni&Guy Seongsu: atmosphere and seating

Inside, the overall feel is modern and clean. Long tables and mirrors line the windows, and even the cutting stations felt tidy — the salon itself was pretty.

The area for heat processing during a perm is set up separately by the window. Instead of sitting facing a mirror, you sit facing outside, so I could relax during the service without feeling self-conscious about my surroundings.

The salon was well kept, so it was very comfortable the whole time I was sitting there. There's plenty of space between customer seats too.

Hippie perm consultation: filling in the form with stylist Sangyeon

Once you sit down, you first fill out a consultation form. It asks not just about the style you want but also your face shape, whether you usually tie your hair up, and what tools you use at home.

I had my hair done by Sangyeon. Rather than just going by what I wrote on the form, she looked at the style I wanted along with my face shape and body type, and went through what would suit me one by one.

Why the curl test comes before the full perm

Before the service, they washed my hair first, and instead of going straight into the full perm, they started with a curl test. They applied solution to a small section of hair to see how the curl would actually turn out before continuing with the full service — I especially liked that they did a separate curl test before committing to the whole head.

After the curl test, they moved on to the full service. They wound rods throughout to set the curl, checking the shape one by one to make sure it matched the hippie perm look I wanted. I've gotten hippie perms elsewhere before, but this was the most meticulous I've ever experienced!!

What you can drink during the perm

You can also pick a drink while getting your hair done. Options included Americano, iced tea, rooibos, peppermint, chamomile, green tea, and orange juice.

Drink menu offered during the service

I ordered orange juice, and they also brought out butter cookies and chocolate.

Once everything's done and the rods come out, the curls are tightly coiled like this at first.

How to style hippie perm curls at home with a diffuser

I already liked that they did a curl test before the perm, but what I liked just as much was that they explained in detail how to style it at home! Using a diffuser attachment on a hair dryer, Sangyeon personally showed me how to dry the curls from roots to ends, explaining it step by step. She even told me which product to use so I could replicate it at home exactly, so I ordered one as soon as I got back.

The finished long-hair hippie perm

Here's the finished look!! The curls turned out evenly from roots to ends, which was really satisfying! Since my hair is fairly long, I was worried the curls at the bottom might droop, but they stayed firm all the way to the ends, so the overall shape turned out really pretty. It was exactly the look I wanted, so I was very happy with the result.

Is Toni&Guy Seongsu worth it for a hippie perm?

This hippie perm was satisfying from consultation to finish because everything was handled so carefully. I especially liked that before the full service, they ran a curl test on a section of hair to check how the curl would actually turn out before proceeding with the whole head. They didn't just focus on the style I wanted but also considered my face shape and body type, and kept checking the curl throughout the service, which gave me a lot of confidence. At the end, they used a diffuser to show me exactly how to dry it at home. Looking good right out of the salon matters, but so does being easy to style at home, and they took care of that too.

In the end, the curls came out evenly from roots to ends, and the hippie perm look I wanted really came through, so I was very happy with the result. If you're looking for a Seongsu hair salon that pays close attention to detail with a hippie perm, this is one I'd recommend.

  • A hippie perm finished with care, starting with a curl test before the full service and checking the curl throughout
  • A Seongsu hair salon with a thorough consultation that considers face shape and body type along with the style you want
  • A Ttukseom Station hair salon where the curls turned out evenly from roots to ends, making the result fully satisfying
