When you're traveling in Jeju, sometimes you just want a proper, hearty meal first thing in the morning, right? Especially if your day starts around Seogwipo or Jungmun, you end up hunting for a breakfast spot. This time I went to Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap (중문고등어쌈밥), which has a big dining room and plenty of parking.

A spacious Seogwipo breakfast restaurant: is parking easy?

Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap has a large interior and plenty of parking, so it was easy to reach by rental car for breakfast. Inside, it was much bigger than I expected. The tables are spaced out comfortably and the whole place feels pleasant, so it looked fine for family visits or eating with a group.

The spacious parking lot is a big plus if you're driving. Most people get around Jeju by rental car, so easy parking takes some of the pressure off choosing a restaurant, doesn't it?

There were also lots of autographs from celebrities who have visited hanging in the restaurant. It caught my eye that famous people have been here too. If you want a hearty Korean breakfast in Seogwipo, it's a good place to remember.

I went because I heard you can eat a filling meal here from the morning, and the food was tasty and the self-serve bar was generous, so I left very satisfied. We ordered braised mackerel with aged kimchi, abalone pot rice and grilled tilefish. It was great to enjoy the fish dishes I'd wanted to eat in Jeju all in one meal.

Here are the basic side dishes.

What's on the Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap self-serve bar?

The self-serve bar has unlimited sikhye (sweet rice drink), spicy stir-fried pork, abalone porridge, soybean paste soup and japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), plus assorted side dishes and ssam vegetables. This bar won me over before the food even arrived. It's not just a handful of side dishes; there was a really wide variety.

The side dishes and ssam vegetables are also self-serve and unlimited, so you can take as much as you need.

While waiting for the main dishes, I looked around the bar and there was so much to eat. Honestly, I was almost full from picking at things before the mains even came, haha.

With the spicy stir-fried pork, japchae and soups, it's not just side dishes on the side. You can enjoy it like a full meal.

You can grab ssam vegetables too, so they'd go nicely with the braised mackerel.

Ordering the mains and also making full use of the self-serve bar made this a very satisfying meal.

Braised mackerel with aged kimchi: does it taste fishy?

The braised mackerel with aged kimchi at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap had deep flavor from properly fermented kimchi, and the mackerel was rich and not fishy at all. It was the dish I was looking forward to most. With braised fish, the seasoning matters, but how well the kimchi has aged changes the taste a lot. The kimchi here was really well aged and delicious.

You can taste the deep flavor of well-fermented kimchi, and it goes great with the mackerel.

The mackerel was rich without any fishiness and the flesh was tender, so I enjoyed it a lot.

When braised fish smells fishy, it's hard to keep eating, but the mackerel here was easy to enjoy with no such worry.

Eating the well-aged kimchi with the mackerel naturally made me want rice. We'd also ordered the abalone pot rice, so needless to say we were stuffed. If you like braised fish in Jeju, keep an eye on this braised mackerel with aged kimchi.

Oversized grilled tilefish: how much did the meal cost?

The grilled tilefish at Jungmun Godeungeo Ssam-bap was huge, and the total for three dishes, including the braised mackerel with aged kimchi and abalone pot rice, was in the ₩60,000s. The real jackpot that day turned out to be the grilled tilefish.

The tilefish came out and it was really big, haha. It caught my eye as soon as I saw it, and the taste and texture were satisfying too.

Huge grilled tilefish

The texture of the fish flesh was nice and the flavor rich, perfect with rice. When you come to Jeju you look for fish like hairtail or mackerel, but grilled tilefish is a must too, right?

That said, tilefish is a fairly pricey fish by nature, so the price might feel steep when ordering it at a restaurant.

But that day, enjoying it along with the braised mackerel with aged kimchi and abalone pot rice, the whole meal came to the ₩60,000s.

Considering how many dishes we ate, grilled tilefish included, it felt like pretty good value.
