They also do wedding shoots and ceremonies with a hanok concept, so of course the atmosphere is gorgeous. Cool breeze, a lawn, the sound of the waterwheel turning, the calm hanok and nature all around, and the bakery is good too. A great Hongcheon hanok café.

What is the atmosphere at Gil151 in Hongcheon?

Gil151 feels like a hanok café you'd expect to find in Jeonju. I love the calm, warm feeling of hanok and have been to lots of hanok cafés, so I was a bit surprised to find one like this in Hongcheon! The atmosphere was even better than I expected.

There's also a pond with a turning waterwheel in front of the main building!

Inside, the furniture is all wood, so it feels really warm and cozy. It's so clean that I wondered if it had just opened! I went on a weekday after the holiday, so it was very quiet and empty, perfect for chatting.

What are the menu and prices at Gil151?

Gil151's signature drinks are Flower Blooming in Mud (cream latte) ₩8,300, Around the Time Camellias Bloom (affogato) ₩8,800, Grain Warehouse (grain drink) ₩7,500 and Summer Road (summer limited) ₩8,500. For coffee, you can pick your beans from Kkotgil (acidic), Solgil (nutty) or Nungil (decaf).

A café without a bakery would be such a shame!! The bakery display at Gil151 has a cover in front, so it should keep the dust off. The breads I picked that day were the blueberry pie ₩6,000, the bacon jalapeño bagel ₩6,000 and the tissue bread ₩6,800.

How do the outdoor pavilion seats at Gil151 work?

The pavilion in the yard at Gil151 requires taking your shoes off, and you get 1 hour 30 minutes. The weather was so nice that I wanted to drink my coffee outside, so we headed out! The mountains seem to wrap around the hanok, so it feels comfortable yet grand. Weddings are possible in a place with this traditional hanok feel, so it might be worth asking about!

• No smoking (smoking area is on one side of the parking lot)
• Please tidy up around you before leaving

There are cushions for sitting comfortably in the pavilion too, so we laid down two nice fluffy ones and settled in.

How do the acidic-bean americano and black sesame cream latte taste?

I chose the beans with acidity (Kkotgil) for the iced americano at Gil151! I'm not a fan of acidic coffee, but Mom likes it, so it's nice that you can pick beans to suit your taste.

For the signature cream latte (Flower Blooming in Mud), you can choose black sesame cream or triple berry cream on top, and I went with the nutty black sesame! I usually prefer to drink a cream latte as is rather than stir it, and the nutty black sesame with soft, sweet cream going down smoothly really suited my taste. It was really nutty, sweet, smooth and delicious, and I could see why it's the signature drink.

How are the blueberry pie, bagel and tissue bread at Gil151?

The Gil151 blueberry pie is packed with blueberry jam inside! The outside is a lightly sweet pastry dough, and it goes really well with the fresh tang of the blueberries. Recommended!!

The bacon jalapeño bagel tasted exactly as I imagined, but its fluffy texture went well with the coffee.

Does the tissue bread really tear apart in layers?

Gil151's tissue bread really did tear apart in thin layers. While I was choosing bread, the owner said the tissue bread had just come out, so I picked it! Good salesmanship, haha 🤭 I once tried tissue bread at another café and was disappointed because it didn't pull apart like tissue, but at Gil151 it tears nicely along the layers, which is so cool ><

Would I go back to Gil151 Hanok Cafe in Hongcheon?

Sitting there with good coffee and bread, properly listening to the waterwheel and spacing out, was so nice that if it were just a little closer, I'd visit often!

Before heading home, you can also take a stroll around Gil151, so we walked for a little while.
