Gangnam café street salt coffee & hot Americano: Upper and Under

Out of all the cafés on Gangnam's café street, I went to Upper and Under (어퍼앤언더), with its stylish red bricks and a big tree out front.

Where is Upper and Under in Gangnam, and what's the vibe?

Upper and Under is a dessert café on Gangnam café street, just out of Exit 6 of Sinnonhyeon Station. The address is 28 Gangnam-daero 102-gil, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, South Korea, and it uses the basement level, the 1st floor and the 2nd floor.

Upper and Under's standout feature: the outdoor terrace

What makes this Sinnonhyeon café special is the outdoor terrace. A gentle breeze, warm sunshine ♡

Seating by floor: roomy table spacing on the 2nd floor

The main counter is on the 1st floor, and the seating is in the basement and on the 2nd floor. I especially liked how far apart the tables are on the 2nd floor.

What cakes does Upper and Under serve?

The display case holds five cakes, all looking nice and cool, and every one is ₩8,500. Tiramisu cake ₩8,500, mango cake ₩8,500.

The cake names are straightforward, and the main ingredient sits right on top, ta-da ♡♡ Raspberry cake ₩8,500, Earl Grey grapefruit cake ₩8,500.

Tiramisu, mango cake, raspberry cake, Earl Grey grapefruit and lemon cake. The lemon cake is ₩8,500 too.

Baked goods prices: madeleines, canelés and financiers

One corner of Upper and Under is packed with freshly baked goods. Lemon madeleine ₩4,300, sweet corn madeleine ₩4,500, and with their lemon slices and corn decorations they're so cute and totally live up to their names.

Double vanilla canelé ₩4,500, vanilla canelé ₩4,200, matcha canelé ₩4,500. The outside is crisp and caramelized, and the inside is moist and chewy.

※Canelé: a traditional pastry from the Bordeaux region of France. The official name is "Canelés de Bordeaux." Canelé is French for "fluted, ridged, grooved," referring to the shape of the special mold used to bake it.

There are financiers, plus butter tteok (rice cake) you can top with condensed milk for extra flavor. Salt choco financier ₩4,100, hojicha pecan financier ₩4,700.

The Americano at Upper and Under is ₩6,500. One of the ways your taste buds change as you get older (haha): even on a sweltering day, I'm completely a hot-americano person. Served in a mug filled to the brim. Pass ♡

Is Upper and Under's Salty Caramel worth it as a salt coffee?

Yes, I recommend the Salty Caramel (₩8,000). As a self-proclaimed salt coffee expert these days (I've had it a few times), I recommend the Salty Caramel at Upper and Under, the café near Sinnonhyeon Station.

Is it made with Lotus biscuit powder? Stir it with the straw and sip: the cream is smooth and rich, with cookie crumbs you can gently chew. Totally my taste!!!! This cream is the real deal. I love it ♡♡♡

Eating the financier with a fork and knife

The financier was ₩3,800. I liked Upper and Under's in-store fork and knife so much that I cut the financier with the knife too. 🤣
