What kind of dessert café is Jitheunsan in Yeonnam-dong?
I stopped by Jitheunsan (짙은산) to read and have coffee in Yeonnam-dong. It is a terrine cake specialty shop on the first floor at 27 Seongmisan-ro 29an-gil, Mapo-gu, Seoul. I was curious about its flourless desserts and cozy atmosphere.

At the entrance, there was a stone monument engraved with the café's name and some trekking poles. The setting reminded me of Bukhansan, as though it were somewhere to pause while hiking. When I opened the door, I caught a warm, sweet scent like freshly baked brownies.
When I visited, several people were having coffee alone, with others occasionally stopping by for takeout. The interior was calm and cozy, making it comfortable to sit by myself.

How do you choose from the menu if terrine is new to you?
Beside the small kiosk were a handwritten menu board and a menu guide with hand-drawn, colored illustrations. Even though I was trying terrine for the first time, I could get a sense of what kind of dessert it was by reading the descriptions. There were seasonal drinks and desserts too, which made me wonder what might appear when the season changes.

Reading the menu guide, I learned that terrine is a cake that brings out the concentrated flavor of its ingredients. At Jitheunsan, it is baked without flour in a round mold, and I noticed how the edges rose slightly in a curve.

How were the chestnut terrine and oat latte?
After looking over the illustrated menu and display case, I ordered chestnut terrine and an oat latte. I chose the combination because I usually like chestnut cakes. At the time of my visit, there was no additional charge to switch a regular latte to oat milk. Since I am sensitive to the smell of white milk and sometimes feel uncomfortable after dairy drinks, I was glad to have that option.
A staff member brought my order to the table. The chestnut terrine with a small flag, an oat latte showing its espresso layers, a fork, and a small guide were neatly arranged on a wooden tray.

The chestnut terrine had a rich chestnut flavor and aroma. It was dense but melted softly in my mouth, and it felt lighter and moister than I expected. There was little lingering heaviness after a bite, and my stomach felt comfortable afterward that day.

The oat latte had a good balance of espresso and oat milk. The grain aroma of the oats was pleasantly nutty, and its clean finish made it nice to alternate with the sweet chestnut terrine.

The coaster with its logo label had a handmade feel. The flag in the cake had different designs on each side, making me look more closely at even the small details.

Was it comfortable to stay and read alone?
I read Bel-Ami while eating the terrine one bite at a time and sipping the oat latte. The terrine was better savored slowly than eaten in a hurry. The low light from the long pendant lamps also suited the calm atmosphere.

While I was reading, a staff member brought me lemon sherbet as a palate cleanser. It was an unexpected service that day. Its refreshing, cool flavor helped clear my head so I could focus on reading again.

In the restroom, I saw a notice about discounts for packaged desserts and coupons that customers had completed and put up. The top row of coupons had leaf stamps and the bottom row had flower stamps, which made me want to collect them too.

This visit let me try a flavor and texture different from whipped-cream or chiffon cake. The rich chestnut flavor and soft texture stayed with me, and it was a comfortable place to have dessert and read alone. Next time, I would like to return with a friend for terrine.
