Munjeong pot rice with a school friend: steak & sea bream at Gome Mui
In short
Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong is a Japanese pot rice and rice bowl restaurant in the basement of Terra Tower by Munjeong Station in Songpa, Seoul. Over a shared steak rice bowl and sea bream rice bowl with a high school friend, the steak at Gome Mui stayed juicy and the sea bream tasted clean with no fishy smell, while the pollock roe (mentaiko) side dish was good enough to refill. Finishing with sungnyung (scorched-rice tea) from the stone pot made Gome Mui a satisfying meal to the last spoonful.

A high school friend of mine who has done pretty well for himself wanted to meet, so we went to Terra Tower, the legal district in Munjeong... where the Seoul Eastern Detention Center is... where the former president stayed...
Juicy steak, mild sea bream with no fishy smell, and a finish of sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). The flow of this Munjeong Station rice bowl spot was perfect.
How do you get to Gome Mui in Terra Tower by Munjeong Station?
Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong is inside Terra Tower near Munjeong Station. Go inside and you reach a passage that looks like a European alley, so even the walk to the restaurant was nicer than I expected. The ceiling is high, and there are benches and lamp-style lighting here and there, so it feels less stuffy than an ordinary commercial building.

First of all, Terra Tower itself is super clean and parking is easy. There are lots of newly built buildings around Munjeong Station, so it gives off a bit of a Wirye-style new town feeling?

What is the atmosphere like inside Gome Mui?
The inside of the restaurant is long and narrow. Tables are lined up neatly on one side and an open kitchen runs along the other, so you can naturally watch the food being prepared.

The tables and floor were kept clean, and it felt comfortable both for eating alone and for sitting across from a friend. The staff were kind from ordering through any guidance we needed, which made a good first impression.

Is the steak in the Gome Mui steak rice bowl tough?
The steak in the Gome Mui steak rice bowl was not tough, and it was juicy. I ordered the steak rice bowl and my friend picked the sea bream rice bowl. The steak bowl caught my eye the moment it came out.

How do they make that yolk without breaking it? I've never once managed it, so maybe I should just order some on Coupang~
A generous amount of big steak pieces sits on the hot stone pot, with scallions, sesame, garlic chips and the yolk in the middle. It isn't just a bowl with a few slices of meat on top; it's set up so you mix everything properly from start to finish. The steak wasn't tough and was juicy. You could clearly taste the meat in every bite, and the garlic chips added a crunchy texture here and there so it never got monotonous.

When I broke the yolk and mixed the rice and steak together, it added a natural nuttiness. The seasoning wasn't too sweet or salty, so it didn't cover the taste of the meat, and the ratio of rice to meat was good too.

Even after mixing it like in the photo, plenty of steak pieces were left here and there, so I could eat it with meat down to the last spoonful.
Does the Gome Mui sea bream rice bowl taste fishy?

The Gome Mui sea bream rice bowl had no fishy smell at all and was mild, and personally it surprised me even more than the steak. When you hear fish rice bowl, salmon is usually the first thing that comes to mind, but this was the first time I really felt that sea bream can work so well in a rice bowl too.
The sea bream had no fishy smell at all and was mild. The flesh flakes softly without being too mushy, so the texture was good, and eating it with fragrant greens like minari (water dropwort) brought out the clean taste even more.

The sea bream is tasty on its own, but since seaweed came with it, putting rice and sea bream on top made the combination much better. The nuttiness of the seaweed, the mildness of the sea bream and the aroma of the greens blended naturally in one bite.

If you add a little of the salted pollock roe (myeongranjeot) served as a side dish, the taste changes again.

Is the Gome Mui pollock roe side dish worth a refill?
The salted pollock roe side dish at Gome Mui isn't salty and has plenty of savory depth, so I ended up getting a refill. What stuck with me that day as much as the main dishes was the roe. Salted roe is often too salty or leaves a bitter aftertaste, but Gome Mui's wasn't like that.
Rather than piling a lot on at once, a little with each spoonful of rice really wakes up your appetite. It isn't harsh, so you keep reaching for it, and you end up asking for a refill. If the steak and sea bream are the leads, the roe was a supporting actor with real presence. Calling it a Yoo Hae-jin-level supporting actor (a Korean actor famous for stealing scenes) that quietly lifts the whole meal is no exaggeration.
How to finish your meal with sungnyung from the stone pot
The last step of a stone pot rice bowl is, of course, sungnyung.

After scooping out a fair amount of rice from the stone pot, pour in hot water and wait a moment. The scorched rice loosens softly and turns into a nutty sungnyung (scorched-rice tea). After meat, yolk and seasoning, finishing with warm sungnyung left my mouth feeling clean and my stomach comfortable. There was no need to go looking for coffee or a strawberry latte afterward. The sungnyung even did the job of dessert.
Who is Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong good for?
Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong has easy parking, a clean restaurant and kind staff. The menu looks like familiar rice bowls, but both the steak and the sea bream had a clear character of their own, and with the side dish and sungnyung it was a satisfying meal to the end.
It suits people looking for a clean, comfortable restaurant near Munjeong Station. In particular, if you want a Terra Tower restaurant near Munjeong Station with easy parking, or a filling but not overpowering dinner spot in Munjeong, I'd recommend Gome Mui Songpa Munjeong.
