It had been a long time since I last visited Danyang.

The Eight Scenic Views come first, of course, but then comes the market! To soak up that hometown feeling, I stopped by Gugyeong Market (구경시장), Danyang's famous market, a must-visit haha.

It happened to be a weekend that overlapped with the 5-day market (a traditional market held every five days), so the market was already full of energy and warmth. Along with the Danyang market eats I newly discovered in a familiar place, I'll give you an honest tasting review of a quirky local bakery that's been blowing up on social media lately.

After parking, the moment I stepped into the charming market entrance, a savory, sweet smell brushed past my nose and made me walk faster.

What is Gugyeong Market in Danyang like on a weekend market day?
On a weekend market day, Gugyeong Market was packed with tourists from all over the country and local residents. Hearing the bustle of the crowd and the friendly calls of the vendors, I felt like I was on a genuine local trip, and it made me really happy.
Strolling down the market's food alley, you notice all sorts of distinctive snacks made with garlic, Danyang's signature specialty. Soft garlic dumplings, sweet-and-spicy garlic chicken bites, garlic sundae (Korean blood sausage) in a deep broth... the menu is so varied that I had a happy dilemma over what to eat first.

But the star that caught my eyes and my stomach at once was Black Garlic Salt Bread, a bakery that's been rising as a Danyang landmark among bread lovers lately.

I love salt bread so much that I've tried nearly every famous bakery around the country, so a salt bread made with Danyang's specialty black garlic? That unusual combo made me too curious to walk past.

How long was the wait at Black Garlic Salt Bread?
It was a weekend and market day, so a long line stretched in front of the shop and there was a bit of a wait. From the moment I got near, the savory scent of butter and the mild, sweet aroma of black garlic were drifting all around.
Still, seeing the glowing, piping-hot salt bread coming out freshly baked in the shop, the waiting wasn't boring at all, it was exciting.

The shop has a black garlic aging room. It made me trust them so much haha.

After a long wait, my turn finally came, and the black garlic salt bread I faced looked and felt far better than I'd expected.

Is black garlic salt bread too garlicky?
Danyang's black garlic salt bread had no sharp bite or spiciness at all, just a soft, gentle flavor. Many people worry that a bread with garlic will be too pungent or harsh in smell and taste, but this one wiped those worries away.

The deep, mild sweetness from long, careful aging and the umami of black garlic blended beautifully with the savory richness of French butter.

Crisp outside, chewy inside, and the black garlic sauce
The moment I took a bite, the outside was crisp while the inside was chewy and moist, and the sweet-bitter black garlic sauce melted chewily into the bread like a stroke of genius.
Salt bread can get greasy fast because of all that butter, but black garlic's deep umami cuts through it so cleanly that there's no time to get tired of it. It was addictive, and I kept reaching for it until the last bite.

The salty topping, the rich butter and the natural sweetness of black garlic were perfectly balanced, the textbook peak of sweet-and-salty. It's not harsh, it feels healthy yet refined, a local flavor, so I thought it would be great as a kids' snack and would suit parents and older folks too.

How are the cleanliness and service at Black Garlic Salt Bread?
I became convinced that Black Garlic Salt Bread in Gugyeong Market is a bakery anyone, of any age, can enjoy without a divide in opinions. The inside of the shop was also neat and hygienically kept, which I trusted,

and above all, even while swamped with a rush of customers, the owner and staff never lost their smiles and served us warmly and kindly, so I felt treated well and happy the whole time.

With great taste plus warm service, it became the most satisfying memory of my trip home.
