I ate galbitang (beef short rib soup) at Hanppong (한뽕), a galbitang spot in Dunsan-dong, Daejeon! It had lots of ribs and lots of rib meat, and I left really satisfied. I already want to go back, so let me walk you through the whole visit.

Is Hanppong in Dunsan-dong good for groups?

The Dunsan-dong branch of Hanppong is quite spacious with plenty of seats, so it looked fine for a group dinner or a big party. The whole place was clean, and with aprons and coat hangers provided, I could eat without worrying about stains.

What's on the Hanppong menu besides galbitang?

Hanppong has a range of dishes, including galbitang, gamjatang (pork bone soup), doganitang (ox knee cartilage soup) and suyuk (boiled pork slices). The prices and set-ups looked reasonable too.

How to enjoy Hanppong's silbi kimchi

The table even has instructions for eating the spicy silbi kimchi (실비김치) properly, so I followed them. First cut the kimchi into bite-size pieces, tidy the ribs and vegetables so the broth and ingredients mix well, then add the kimchi to bring out a deep, rich flavor. If you like, add more kimchi to adjust the spice and taste.

Each table has salt, pepper and so on, so you can season to your own taste. The seasoning was just right for me, so I didn't add anything, haha.

The basic side dishes were kkakdugi (cubed radish kimchi) and silbi kimchi, and the silbi kimchi was seriously spicy. I normally can't handle spicy food well, but this kimchi was spicy and addictive, so I kept eating it. It was the kind of taste where I wanted to buy just the kimchi and take it home.

Hanppong's ₩12,000 Mountain-Piled Galbitang: how many ribs?

Hanppong's Mountain-Piled Galbitang (산더미 갈비탕) is ₩12,000, and we ordered two.

At most restaurants, you order galbitang and only a few ribs come in it, right? Honestly that's why, even though I love galbitang, I'd kind of stopped wanting to order it. But Hanppong is the real deal. There were really a lot of ribs.

Packed with ribs, packed with broth! When we ordered galbitang, they also gave us rice, haha.

Hanppong's galbitang came with a clear broth, scallions, glass noodles and ribs. The portion was quite big and I was very satisfied. A bowl like this for ₩12,000? I wondered whether that even makes sense with today's prices.

I also shook in some pepper to taste.

Does the rib meat come off easily?

Each rib in the Mountain-Piled Galbitang is big, with a really generous amount of meat on it. The meat also separated well from the bone, so it was easy to eat.

How does the galbitang broth taste?

The broth was really good, the kind where you could finish a whole bowl of rice by mixing it in. The flavor was deep, and afterward I felt warmed up and properly restored.

When I counted, I think there were about 5 ribs? The amount of meat was really big. I finished it all and was truly full. I'd never seen a galbitang place put in this much meat, so I'm so excited and want to tell everyone!! This place has to get more famous!!

The ribs in the soup were so tender and had soaked up the broth, so they were so good. I caught myself thinking I have to come again. They also gave us a sauce for dipping the ribs, and dipping made them even tastier.

There were plenty of glass noodles too. They're great with rice mixed into the broth, and they're chewy enough to enjoy on their own.
