Yeouido Korean restaurant: braised black hairtail, tteokbokki refills
In short
Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido (화덕으로간고등어반상 여의도점) is a Korean restaurant serving wood-fired grilled fish on basement floor 1 of Lotte Castle Ivy, near Saetgang Station Exit 2 in Yeouido, Seoul. Instead of a set for two, the writer ordered the grilled atka mackerel set (14,500 won) and the braised black hairtail set (16,500 won) separately. Each came as a full spread with rice, soup, japchae (stir-fried glass noodles) and seasoned lotus root, plus unlimited tteokbokki, sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and lettuce from the central self-bar. Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang Yeouido is a good pick when you want grilled fish without cooking it at home or worrying about the smell.

I wanted grilled fish but can't cook it at home because of the smell, then I heard about a place that grills it in a wood-fired oven, so I paid a visit!

Exterior

It looked spacious and pleasant even from outside, and I heard it's been on TV, so I was excited before even going in! It's also newly opened, so it looked clean too.

Atmosphere and Seating: Good for Solo Meals and Group Dinners?
Inside, it's very spacious and pleasant! There are mostly 4-person tables, the spacing between seats is wide, and there are plenty of tables.
Solo meals, group dinners and family meals all seem fine here. Roomy, comfortable, with single-serving menus and good taste too!
Menu and Prices

There are set menus for two and single menus too, so you get plenty of choices, which is a plus! We each picked what we wanted and ordered two single sets.
The set meals are: grilled mackerel set ₩13,500, grilled atka mackerel set ₩14,500, grilled Spanish mackerel set ₩16,500, grilled hairtail set ₩19,500 and braised black hairtail set ₩16,500. Making it spicy costs an extra ₩2,000.

How Do the Grilled Atka Mackerel and Braised Hairtail Sets Taste?
We ordered the grilled atka mackerel set (₩14,500) and the braised black hairtail set (₩16,500). Both came as a generous full tray with rice, soup and side dishes. The sides were japchae (glass noodle stir-fry), seasoned lotus root, zucchini and chonggak kimchi (whole small radish kimchi), and they were all so good that I was happy🤤

The braised hairtail was cooked sweet and spicy, just right with rice. The flesh came off the bones easily and softly. It also arrived piping hot, so it stayed warm all the way through the meal.

The atka mackerel was also grilled in the wood-fired oven, with crispy skin and moist flesh. The table has soy sauce, wasabi and doenjang (soybean paste), and dipping it in the different sauces made it even better. Both dishes were great, but I especially loved the atka mackerel. Next time I want to try the grilled mackerel that's in the restaurant's name, haha.

Unlimited Tteokbokki and Sungnyung at the Self-Bar
The self-bar is in the middle of the restaurant! Side dishes, sungnyung (scorched rice tea) and even tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) are all unlimited. What a generous place!!!
You can take as much lettuce and side dishes as you like, so you can load up without worrying what anyone thinks. That was so, so convenient and nice.

I wondered whether the tteokbokki would really be good, but honestly... it is. Tteokbokki from a self-bar at this quality? You have to try it. The sungnyung was also great before and after the meal.
Dessert

You can have coffee and plum tea after your meal too, so don't forget to grab some! It was a really hearty and delicious meal, and with dessert it's just perfect, haha.
If you're looking for a tidy Korean meal in Yeouido, I recommend Hwadeogeuro Gan Godeungeo Bansang. Being able to pick single sets to your own taste made it even better. Highly recommended!!
