Daegu makes me think of makchang right away, so I went to Bongja Makchang, a Jongno, Daegu restaurant famous for it. You can enjoy savory makchang alongside raw pork belly here, so even if you're not great with makchang, you can still come for the meat.
What makes Bongja Makchang such good value isn't just the makchang — it's that the self-serve corner has unlimited ramyeon, and there's a complimentary patbingsu for dessert, so grilled meat, a full meal, and dessert are all covered. Definitely recommend it.

What the 34,000 won Bongja Set looks like

We ordered the Bongja Set, which lets you enjoy two menu items at once. We went with a full plate of raw makchang and a half plate of raw pork belly! Even if you're not great with makchang, there's plenty of other meat — raw pork belly, frozen thin-sliced pork, pork neck, beef brisket — so it worked out well.

The raw makchang arrived pre-cooked and cut into easy-to-eat pieces. It came with bracken, rice cake, king oyster mushrooms, and salted hairtail intestines to grill alongside it.

Bongja Makchang serves a good spread of sides that pair well with the meat — scallions, seasoned lettuce, bean sprouts, kimchi, curry powder, pickled onions, ssamjang, chili peppers, and garlic all come as standard. The makjang dipping sauce was tasty too.

How the pre-grilled raw makchang tastes
At this Jongno, Daegu makchang restaurant, the makchang comes pre-cooked, so it grills up quickly and you can eat right away — really nice.

I grilled the raw makchang until nicely golden and dipped it in makjang — crispy outside, chewy inside, and it paired perfectly with the sauce, even more delicious.

Above all, there was no gamey smell, and the more you chewed the more savory the raw makchang got! It went great with pickled radish, bracken, salted hairtail intestines, and napa cabbage wraps — really versatile, this Bongja Makchang.
Unlimited ramyeon, steamed egg and free patbingsu
Bongja Makchang has a self-serve corner. You can just help yourself to extra side dishes there whenever you like.
What really sets Bongja Makchang apart: unlimited ramyeon! You're bound to crave ramyeon while eating makchang, and Bongja Makchang gives you 7 kinds, free and unlimited — total generosity from the owner, thumbs up.

We boiled up a pack of buldak-bokkeum-myeon (fire noodles) and had it alongside the makchang — genuinely delicious.

And after finishing all the food, if you order it, they bring out a complimentary patbingsu!! Wow — the portion is huge and it's delicious, thumbs up.
