Chuncheon buckwheat spot, revisit with Mom, warm sujebi: Hyeondae
In short
Hyeondae Memil (현대메밀) is a buckwheat fusion Korean restaurant in Toegye-dong, near Namchuncheon Station in Chuncheon, set in a renovated old house that was once a supermarket and a barbershop. The writer first came to Hyeondae Memil with her partner, then returned with her mother, who had traveled from far away. They waited about 15 minutes at a late weekend lunch and ordered truffle potato pancake, warm sujebi (hand-torn dough soup) and half-and-half buckwheat jeonbyeong (buckwheat crepe rolls). Verdict: Hyeondae Memil is a Chuncheon buckwheat restaurant that won over Mom's taste too, good for taking parents and still worth a nod on a repeat visit.

Hyeondae Memil in Chuncheon has officially become one of my go-back-again places. I went once with my partner, and this time I brought my mom, who came from far away! I was trying to think of somewhere delicious for her, and Hyeondae Memil popped into my head again!!! This time I ordered some different dishes too. Let me tell you about the place that completely won over my mom's taste buds 💚

Hyeondae Memil opening hours and parking
Hyeondae Memil is open from 11:00 to 20:30, with a break from 15:00 to 17:00 and last order at 20:00. It's open every day of the year, which makes it easy to fit into a Chuncheon trip.
For parking, 2-3 cars fit on the sidewalk (private land) in front of the restaurant or to its left. When that's full, you can park along the roadside in the alley leading up to the community service center.
Hyeondae Memil exterior and atmosphere
The exterior caught my mom's eye right away, haha. The atmosphere gets a pass from me!!!

How long is the weekend lunch wait at Hyeondae Memil?
We came for a late weekend lunch and there were still 2 groups ahead of us. We went in after about 15 minutes. As you'd expect from a Chuncheon date spot, there's a wait. You enter your phone number and wait in the waiting area.

A big fan was running so the waiting area didn't get hot~~~ Thanks to that, we waited comfortably! Menus are kept at the entrance and in the waiting area too, so Mom and I could browse and choose while we waited. Handy! haha

We got in after about 15 minutes. The inside was full, so I took photos of the interior again on our way out, haha. There's buckwheat tea(?) in a homey water bottle haha. We ordered what we'd picked out beforehand: truffle potato pancake, warm sujebi (hand-pulled dough soup) and half-and-half buckwheat jeonbyeong (buckwheat crepe rolls)! hahaha

How does Hyeondae Memil's truffle potato pancake taste?
The first dish out was the truffle potato pancake! Can't you see the crunch even in the photo? The special truffle sauce and the crispy potato pancake were a perfect match 👏

Truffle sauce sits on top of thinly shredded potato. Mom enjoyed it too, which made me so proud~~~ haha

A dish for parents' taste: warm buckwheat sujebi
The second dish was the warm sujebi. I ordered it when I came with my partner and was so satisfied that I got it again. Buckwheat dough flakes and assorted vegetables come together, and I just knew Mom would like it! Sure enough, right up her alley!!! 💯
Dip the vegetables in the soy sauce, then take a spoonful of broth and sujebi together, and it's a thumbs up!! The kind of flavor that makes you nod along, haha.

Which sauce goes with the half-and-half buckwheat jeonbyeong?
Hyeondae Memil's half-and-half buckwheat jeonbyeong comes with two flavors: homemade balsamic sauce and spicy cheongyang chili soy sauce. It came out last, and the looks alone were great hahaha. The two sauces go together so harmoniously, and being able to enjoy the jeonbyeong two ways is a real charm too!

Inside Hyeondae Memil, an old house that was a supermarket and barbershop
Hyeondae Memil keeps the charm of an old house that once ran as a supermarket and barbershop, reinterpreted in a modern style. On the way out, stuffed to the brim with Mom, I took a few more interior photos haha. The space and the food go together so well.

A Chuncheon lunch date with Mom: how did it go?
Our Chuncheon food date with Mom was, of course, a success haha. Hyeondae Memil was the first place that came to mind, and I felt so proud that I could give her both memories and delicious food ✨ The modern takes on buckwheat felt fresh, and with great looks and flavor, I was very satisfied. Even on a second visit, it was a taste that made me nod along!

The owner's thoughtfulness stood out on the way out too~ haha. Febreze, mouthwash and even other etiquette touches! We left really full and happy 😆
Hyeondae Memil is great with friends or a partner, but I think it's also great with parents like I did! I treated her to old memories and tasty food at the same time, and had a very happy time ❤️
