Sokcho market mulhoe spot: ₩25,000 abalone mulhoe feeds two, Hwanggeum

Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip is a new mulhoe (Korean cold raw fish soup) restaurant in an alley near the entrance of Sokcho Jungang Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. After a round of market snacks, the writer took one portion of abalone mulhoe (₩25,000) to go in a cooler bag. It came packed with thick abalone, raw fish and heaps of vegetables like a portion for two, plus a refreshing sweet, sour and spicy sauce in a separate can. For a generous, good-value mulhoe near Sokcho Jungang Market, one portion of Sokcho Hwanggeum Mulhoe Hoetjip's abalone mulhoe is plenty.

On a summer family trip, the writer took out nurungji (scorched-rice) squid sundae, egg-batter squid sundae and potato pancake to share with the kids; Ddogi-ne Twigim cooks everything to order, so there is a wait, but the food comes out fresh. Choose nurungji squid sundae for crunch and egg-batter squid sundae for softness, and on a first visit, try both.
