Pregnancy-friendly Namhansanseong café: decaf latte, éclair at Sum
In short
Sum (카페 숨) is a large bakery café with terraces in Ojeon-ri, Namhansanseong-myeon, Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province. On a holiday drive to Namhansanseong, a pregnant blogger and her husband had a decaf vanilla bean latte, a hot Americano (₩6,500), an éclair and a mocha cream bun on Sum's outdoor terrace. Sum can make every coffee decaf and spaces its terrace tables generously, so it suits expectant mothers and anyone looking for a quiet break.

Sum in Namhansanseong: a good café for pregnant visitors to get some fresh air
Sum is a terrace bakery café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi, which we visited on a holiday drive to Namhansanseong. I wanted somewhere quiet to sit in the fresh air, not a crowded spot, and Sum turned out to be just that!
The weather this holiday was so lovely! I'm technically a mom-to-be on doctor-ordered lie-down rest..... but it was far too nice to stay home! I insisted that on a day like this we had to sit outside, so I went looking for a terrace café and we headed to Sum (카페숨) in Namhansanseong.
What are the parking and exterior of Sum like?
Sum has a big building that stands out, so it wasn't hard to find.

We could park right beside the building, which was convenient.

The parking lot is huge, right!!!! You have to come by car to places like this, so a big lot matters, and I was glad Sum has one!

Inside Sum: layout and seating
At Sum you order and pick your bread on the 1st floor of the main building, and the 2nd floor connects to an annex, so you can wander between them freely.

The interior has floor-to-ceiling windows, so the green forest outside fills the view~!

There's a rooftop and an outdoor terrace too, so this Gwangju café gives you plenty of seating choices! It's exactly this quiet feel that makes us come to Gwangju more often than to cafés in Seongnam.
What breads does the bakery at Sum have?
Sum has a really wide range of breads: plain salt bread, the signature yeontan bread (named after a black coal briquette), éclairs and salt bread variations. My eyes went straight to the bread display the moment we walked in.

It's a lineup that would satisfy you even if you only stopped by while hunting for a Namhansanseong restaurant!

Besides the basic salt bread, there was the signature yeontan bread that keeps the black briquette shape, éclairs and salt bread variations. I thought about getting the yeontan bread since it's the signature, but it has sweet red bean inside, so after some agonizing, haha, I picked the breads with whipped cream and chocolate!
Every single bread looked so good that I couldn't decide~~ They seem to be baked in-house, because each one had a glossy shine and looked delicious, and when I actually ate them, yep! Namhansanseong's bakery-café champion, confirmed. They had lots of cakes too, but I was in the mood for bread today, so bread it was.
Coffee prices at Sum and switching to decaf

An Americano at Sum is ₩6,500, which is fairly reasonable for a big suburban café in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. My husband ordered a hot Americano and I ordered a decaf vanilla bean latte.
As a pregnant person, I was really happy that every coffee can be switched to decaf. Some cafés don't have decaf beans at all, which has been a letdown.

Is the outdoor terrace at Sum crowded?
The terrace tables at Sum are lined up in a row with generous spacing, so you barely hear the people next to you. The weather was nice so we took a spot on the terrace, and unlike other cafés where even the terrace is packed, it wasn't crowded at all.
Eating bread and chatting in the sun and breeze, my husband said it felt like we'd finally found a truly healing café! I loved it too~~ It was my first time in a while to find such a relaxed spot among Gwangju cafés. For a moment we wondered, "Should we move out to somewhere quiet like this?" and then came right back to the conclusion that we're city people. We'll just keep dreaming, haha.
The éclair and mocha cream bun at Sum

Not many places sell éclairs, so I ordered the one at Sum, and it was much better than I expected. The crisp choux shell is packed with smooth cream, and I couldn't help saying "Oh!" at the first bite.
I ordered the mocha cream bun because other Gwangju cafés rarely sell it. The mildly coffee-scented mocha bun is stuffed with whipped cream, and it went really well with coffee!
Who I recommend Sum to
- A quiet outdoor terrace and floor-to-ceiling forest views
- A Namhansanseong bakery with a variety of in-house baked breads
- Dessert after a Namhansanseong restaurant outing
- Every coffee can be switched to decaf
I recommend it as a Namhansanseong café to stop at on a drive on a nice day. If you're looking for a Gwangju café for a quiet break, definitely visit Sum. We ate well and left feeling refreshed!
