Sindorim jokbal restaurant with Mom: 40-min weekend wait, Sambaekga

In short

Sindorim Sambaekga (신도림삼백가) is a Korean restaurant serving jokbal (braised pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork) in the Sindorim Prugio 1st Complex and Homeplus building near Sindorim Station in Guro, Seoul. After waiting about 40 minutes on a weekend afternoon, the writer and her mom shared the Sambaek Jokbal + Kalguksu set for ₩51,000, switching to clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) for ₩1,000 more. The richly seasoned Sambaek Jokbal was good, but the clam kalguksu was the best dish of the day at Sindorim Sambaekga.

I went to Sambaekga in Sindorim for a weekend meal out with my mom. I'd heard it's popular any day of the week, but when we showed up on a weekend afternoon we waited a whole 40 minutes..! The jokbal was tasty, but what stuck with me most was the clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) that comes in the set. We ordered the Sambaek Jokbal and kalguksu set and it was super filling and delicious.

Side dishes at Sindorim Sambaekga that impressed from the start

Basic side dishes at Sindorim Sambaekga
Basic side dishes

The basic side dishes were buchu kimchi (garlic chive kimchi), mumallaengi (dried radish strips) and bossam kimchi. They were all delicious and my mom loved them haha. Each one went well with the jokbal.

Eat the chive kimchi with the jokbal and it's zero greasiness! The dried radish has a lovely crunchy texture.

Bossam kimchi at Sindorim Sambaekga

The bossam kimchi is seriously good!!! Bossam kimchi is the best. Even just jokbal with kimchi throws a party in your mouth.

Sambaekga also gives you a little naengchae jokbal (cold jokbal salad) as a free service dish to taste! It's a different feel from the main dish, so it was nice for switching up your palate.

How does Sambaek Jokbal taste? Richly seasoned

Heavily seasoned Sambaek Jokbal at Sindorim Sambaekga

The Sambaek Jokbal at Sindorim Sambaekga is on the heavily seasoned side~ I like food with a bit of punch so I enjoyed it, but if you prefer mild, clean-tasting jokbal, it might feel a little strong!

The jokbal is so tender you could break it apart with your tongue. It's even better wrapped in lettuce.

It's tasty on its own, and I loved that three sauces come with it! It goes really well with the garlic sauce haha.

It also pairs nicely with the chive kimchi or the dried radish.

Clam kalguksu that beat our expectations

Instead of the standard kalguksu in the set, I paid ₩1,000 extra to switch to clam kalguksu, and it was totally the right call hehehe

There were plenty of clams too, so the savory depth was just amazing T_T

The broth was delicious and the noodles slid down soft, so I really enjoyed it. Eating jokbal and then taking a spoonful of warm kalguksu broth is a perfect match. Of everything we ate that day, the clam kalguksu was my absolute favorite. If you visit Sambaekga, definitely order the kalguksu too!

Sindorim Sambaekga honest review: the verdict

Sindorim Sambaekga is a good place when you want jokbal and kalguksu together. The chive kimchi, dried radish and bossam kimchi were delicious, and the clam kalguksu I ordered with the jokbal was satisfying too. The jokbal is strongly seasoned, so it went even better with wrap vegetables and kimchi. Above all, I didn't expect much from the kalguksu and ended up loving it, so it's what I remember most.

The downside is that we waited about 40 minutes on a weekend afternoon, so if you want to avoid the wait, give yourself plenty of time. If you're looking for a jokbal restaurant in Sindorim, I recommend Sambaekga!!! It's a good pick when you want clam kalguksu along with your jokbal :)
