Mat Chandeul Wang Sogeum Gui Yangju Branch is an aged pork BBQ restaurant in Okjeong-dong, Yangju, where staff grill the meat at your table from start to finish and show you how to eat it. Sokcho family sashimi restaurant with mul-hoe: Hanggu Hwareo

Hanggu Hwareo (항구활어) is a sea-view raw fish restaurant in Building S of Daepo Port Fish Market in Sokcho, Gangwon, where you pick seafood at the market and eat it at the restaurant across the way. A family ordered a large sashimi platter and mul-hoe (cold raw fish soup), the spicy fish stew came free, and the kids ate two bowls of rice each with the seaweed soup and pork cutlet served among the side dishes. Thanks to the friendly owner and the floor-to-ceiling sea view, the verdict on Hanggu Hwareo is a 100% chance of returning.

Large Sokcho café on a quiet morning: choco conch bread at Cafe Neorae

Cafe Neorae is a large bakery café on Wonamhaksapyeong-gil in Haksapyeong, Sokcho, with floor-to-ceiling windows facing Ulsanbawi Rock. On a fairly quiet morning, the writer had an Americano, a chocolate latte for the kids and a choco cream conch bread (sora-ppang, a spiral cream-filled pastry), relaxing in a spacious room full of palm-like plants; bakery items cost about ₩4,500–6,000. For Sokcho travelers who want mountain views rather than ocean views, Cafe Neorae is a good stop during a drive or a Seoraksan itinerary.

Sokcho tofu restaurant with Ulsanbawi views, spicy sundubu: Jinsol

Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu (진솔할머니순두부) is a soft tofu restaurant on Wonamhaksapyeong-gil in Sokcho, Gangwon, where house-made sundubu (soft tofu stew) from 100% Korean Yeoncheon beans comes with a view of Seoraksan's Ulsanbawi Rock. Our family ordered spicy sundubu, mountain herb bibimbap and a bulgogi set cooked in its pot right at the table, and the well-salted side dishes and free acorn jelly for a review were both satisfying. With a large parking lot and a spacious dining hall, Jinsol Halmeoni Sundubu is an ideal Sokcho pick for family meals or taking your parents out.

Bulhyangjip Mulwang Lake Main Branch is a charcoal-grill (yeontan seokswe-gui) restaurant inside the traditional food village at Mulwang Reservoir in Siheung, Gyeonggi. Three of us, the kids included, ordered 3 servings of charcoal pajeon bulgogi (bulgogi topped with scallions) plus bibim guksu (mixed noodles), Sigol Halmae doenjang (soybean paste) stew and steamed egg, and the portions were so generous that we left food behind; the kids' trays and homemade side-dish self-bar were handy too. With a large gravel parking lot and a non-spicy menu, Bulhyangjip is an easy, low-stress choice for a family meal out.
