The five of us had a meal together, including my five-year-old and my parents!

Meal at Galbijeong in Hyeonpung

We debated what meat to get, but since the restaurant is called Galbijeong, we went for five portions of pork ribs! According to my mom, who worked in food for a long time, the meat did not taste like it had been soaked in cheap, heavy seasoning. The marinade had gently soaked in, so it was not overpowering. The sign in the restaurant says it is aged with real natural fruit.... haha. Taking this opportunity to officially recognize my mom as Jang-geum.

If you are looking for a meat restaurant in Hyeonpung to visit with kids, a venue for a team dinner, or clean-tasting marinated ribs rather than aggressively seasoned cheap-tasting ones, this is worth a visit!

A Spacious Dining Hall and Private Rooms

First of all, the restaurant interior is spacious! 🫨 In particular, each seat's backrest also acts as a divider, separating you from the table behind for a comfortable feel. Have a look at the overall table layout and building coverage ratio? haha.

The main hall is lined with standard four-person tables. Inside, the private rooms have tables running lengthwise in a row. And then there is another room inside that, with another long row of tables too haha. This is absolutely made for team dinners haha.

Near the entrance, there is a self-service bar with wrap vegetables and various sauces, plus aprons and small plates, so take what you need.

For three adults and one child, we ordered five portions of ribs in total, yukjeon bibim-naengmyeon, doenjang-jjigae, and three bowls of rice!

Neat Side Dishes and Sauces

Honestly, even if the meat is delicious at a BBQ restaurant, you stop going if the side dishes are lacking, right? I care deeply about side dishes haha. Galbijeong's basic side dishes are all thoughtfully prepared and neatly presented too.

The side dishes included marinated raw crab, yukjeon (pan-fried beef), pickles, kimchi, green onion kimchi, assorted wrap vegetables, and four kinds of sauce. The wrap vegetables are at the self-service bar, so unlimited refills are totally possible.

Four kinds of sauce!

Wasabi and pickled mushroom sauce

My mom especially loved the pickled mushroom sauce? that came with wasabi. And what is a little special here is that each person gets meat-dipping seasonings made with dressed green onion and dressed minced garlic. I had never seen sauces? fresh salads? in this combination before, but piled onto the ribs, they kept the meat from getting tiring and I just kept eating haha.

The yukjeon was tasty without being overpowering too. Just note that it costs an extra ₩3,000 to add it!

Unlimited Fresh Wrap Vegetables

The wrap vegetables here are seriously such a great deal haha. There is lettuce, perilla leaf, angelica, cabbage, onion, raw potato slices, and garlic. None of the vegetables were wilted; everything was fresh, and the owner offers unlimited refills of all this. What generous-owner energy..... haha 👍👍

I honestly have the palate of a little kid, so I do not eat things like angelica, but my parents were amazed that a BBQ restaurant would have it... and ate it so well!

Pork Ribs Grilled by the Staff

Once the side dishes came out, our ordered dishes began arriving. Three portions of ribs came first.

One thing that is great here is that the staff grill it for you!

I think it would be great for a team dinner too. No need to awkwardly wonder who should grill it haha. Once the meat is nicely browned and cooked through, they cut it up deliciously and place it around the edge. Even if you have a kid palate and hate green onion and garlic, please have it with the pickled green onion and garlic! This combination is the real kick 👍

Yukjeon Bibim-naengmyeon and Doenjang-jjigae

We also ordered yukjeon bibim-naengmyeon (spicy mixed cold noodles with pan-fried beef). The noodles were slightly greenish, with yukjeon neatly layered on top. Since the sauce comes separately, it is perfect for eating with kids: serve the child first, then pour in the sauce. As I will mention later, this restaurant has so many kid-friendly touches haha.

The cold noodles were nicely tasty without being too intense. Then we had the doenjang-jjigae (soybean paste stew), which was a little sweet for my taste, but it is no secret that I still mixed my entire bowl of rice into it haha.

Why It Is Great with Kids

Finally, speaking as a mom raising a five-year-old boy energy machine! This restaurant is very kid-friendly. Let me share the three things that made me feel that way.

  • There are individually wrapped utensils just for children. They seem like they were specially ordered, and I am so grateful for that thoughtfulness haha.
  • Maybe for the little “No! I won’t eat it!” crowd, they give you seasoned seaweed and even yogurt haha.
  • They provide separate mini tongs and scissors for cutting a child's meat.

The owner must be a mom at minimum? Or a dad with more than 80 percent involvement in childcare? haha. And there is a jungle gym, though it is not huge!

Children's jungle gym inside the restaurant

While the meat is grilling, or after they finish eating while the adults are still eating, our little energy machines do not sit stillㅜㅜ But with a jungle gym like this, caregivers can absolutely get a little free time haha. It is narrow, but the jungle gym is fairly tall and intricate? My child had a great time climbing up and down on his own.

And there is a prize-grabber machine behind it, which took ₩2,000 from me haha.

These days there are more no-kids zones tooㅜㅜ and raising children keeps getting harder, but a place with such a genuinely welcoming attitude toward kids makes parents feel proud!
