Gwangsan eel restaurant, soy sauce and perilla leaf wraps: Yuil Jangeo
In short
Yuil Jangeo is a self-grill eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan, Gwangju, run directly by its own eel farm, where grilled eel costs 29,000 won per kilogram. The writer stopped in before a trip, picked a 3-4 person portion to pre-grill over charcoal, and received free eel tteokgalbi through a review event. Eel with soy sauce and perilla leaf was the best bite of the meal, and Yuil Jangeo makes a hearty restorative dinner easy on the wallet.

Hello! I stopped by Yuil Jangeo (유일장어), a well-known restaurant in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. Everyone knows eel is good for you, but the price is usually the first thing you check before ordering. This place lets you enjoy grilled eel at ₩29,000 per kilogram, making it a Gwangsan-gu spot for restorative food that's packed with customers for its value.

Where Yuil Jangeo is on Donggok-ro, and parking
Yuil Jangeo in Gwangju is well positioned for a stop after visiting Hwangryong River, Pyeongdong 2nd General Industrial Complex, or Eodeungsan CC. It's also close to Songjeong Station, so it's worth remembering if you're searching for somewhere to eat nearby. The parking area is huge, making it a large restaurant that's convenient for group gatherings, trips, or after hiking.

How long is the wait, and who can reserve?
If there's a wait, you register with Tabling and wait for your turn — not long after we walked in, the waiting had already started. If you'd rather not wait at all, you should arrive before noon to grab a seat easily. Reservations are also possible, with set time slots available: on weekdays you need at least 6 people, and on weekends at least 20 people.

Private rooms and baby chairs for family meals
The restaurant's interior is quite spacious, and besides the open table seating, there are private room tables divided by day of the week, Monday through Sunday. Having rooms available makes it a good spot for taking your parents out for restorative food, family meals, or gatherings with a larger group. There were also baby chairs, so plenty of diners had come with young kids.

How the self-serve system works: pick your eel, then pay
At Yuil Jangeo, once you walk in you pick your already-prepped eel from the entrance, then pay at the counter before eating. After paying, you're assigned a table, and the basic side dishes along with pre-grilled eel are prepared for you. Takeout and delivery are also available, and note that the table setting comes with a per-person charge — check the details in the photos.

Yuil Jangeo is a self-grill eel specialty restaurant supplied directly by its own eel farm. Cutting out middlemen in the supply chain means you can get the eel itself at a reasonable price, so the meal feels generous without weighing on your wallet.

The menu and the review-event eel tteokgalbi
Yuil Jangeo's menu includes grilled eel plus meal items, sides, desserts, alcohol, drinks, and takeout options. Beyond the eel, sides and drinks can be ordered through the table order system — since we had somewhere to be, we just went with a simple cider for our drink. If you take part in the review event, you can also get eel tteokgalbi (grilled eel patty), so it's worth doing along with your meal.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar at Yuil Jangeo
While the eel is being pre-grilled, the basic side dishes get set on the table. You can scoop as much as you need from the self-serve bar, which made it easy to pair generously with the meal. The self-serve bar was also kept clean regularly, which I appreciated.

A 3-4 person portion on charcoal, with soy sauce and perilla leaf
My other half has quite the appetite, so we bought the 3-4 serving portion of eel at Yuil Jangeo in Gwangsan-gu. She grilled it up cheerfully, saying it wasn't that much — and then, as expected, the pestering-for-more began. Haha.

You lightly grill the pre-grilled eel on the charcoal set up at your table until the surface turns golden brown, and then it's ready to eat. The eel itself is on the tender side, which really stirred up the appetite. If I hadn't had somewhere to be, I would've poured myself a drink — having to settle for soda instead was a bit of a shame. Haha.

Eel tastes different depending on the sauce and vegetables you pair it with. Personally, I found the combination with soy sauce and perilla leaf tastier than pairing with garlic or ginger. Being able to have such a filling meal at this price is, I think, the biggest appeal of Yuil Jangeo in Gwangsan-gu.

After joining the review event, we got eel tteokgalbi on the house. For a complimentary item, it was surprisingly tender and pretty tasty. It makes the spread even more generous, so joining the review event for an extra-full meal is definitely worth it. Haha.

Why Yuil Jangeo is a good restorative stop before a trip
As you can tell from the photos and this post, this is a Gwangsan-gu restaurant with fresh ingredients and prices that don't hurt. I used to think eel, while delicious, was something you only eat on special occasions because of the cost — so finding a place where you can enjoy it so practically was a real relief. I got to enjoy a hearty, restorative meal at Yuil Jangeo before heading off on a trip.
