Rice-husk smoked pork belly for two in Jongno3-ga: Cham Dwaejitgan

Cham Dwaejitgan Jongno Main Branch is a pork belly restaurant on the first floor of CGV Piccadilly, right outside Exit 2 of Jongno3-ga Station in Seoul, specialising in Jirisan black pork and Boseong green-tea pork. On an early weekday evening, two servings of black pork five-layer belly (19,000 won per person) came with Jirisan kudzu cold noodles and fried rice, and the meat carried a rice-husk smoke aroma and charcoal-fire juiciness while staff handled the grilling. Between the no-splatter handmade grill and the unlimited vegetable self-bar, Cham Dwaejitgan works just as well for a group dinner as for a date.

Jongno sushi spot with 10,000-won cuttlefish sashimi: Choe Uyeong

Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch is a sushi and sashimi restaurant in the heart of Jongno, Seoul, between Jongak and Gwanghwamun stations. On an early weekday evening the writer ordered the Geuksang sushi set (17 pieces, 33,000 won), the Choesang sushi set (16 pieces, 27,000 won) and cuttlefish sashimi (100g, 10,000 won), and found that only the Geuksang set adds red shrimp with sea urchin sushi and cuttlefish ankimo sushi. With thick cuts of fish, a clean dining room and easy prices, Choe Uyeong Sushiya Jongno Branch beat expectations for a sushi meal near Jongak Station.
