Gwangsan self-grill eel restaurant, 4.8kg for three: Yuil Jangeo
In short
Yuil Jangeo is a farm-direct, self-grill eel restaurant on Donggok-ro in Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju. On a second visit with her mother and husband, the writer picked out four eels weighing 4.8kg after trimming for 51,810 won, then added an eel-packed eel soup for 9,900 won and a 4,000 won table-setting fee for three. For roughly what a pork barbecue night costs, Yuil Jangeo lets three people eat charcoal-grilled eel until they are full.

Eating eel until you're stuffed for about the price of pork barbecue — does that even make sense? Haha.

This is my second visit report for Yuil Jangeo (유일장어), this time with my mom and husband.
Every time I come here, I feel it — among the eel restaurants in Gwangsan, the freshness here is on a different level. ♥
Yuil Jangeo: address, hours and how to get there

- 📍 343 Donggok-ro, 1st floor, Gwangsan-gu, Gwangju
- ⏰ Daily 11:00–21:00 (last order 20:30)
- 🅿️ Free dedicated parking behind the store
If you're coming from Ssanggyo Sutbul Galbi heading toward Naju, you'll see it on the right.
It sits right on the road, and the building is so big it catches your eye from far away!
The parking lot is spacious, so there's zero parking stress. +_+

There's also an entrance on the parking lot side!
What the restaurant looks like inside

Walk in and you're greeted by a wide, open hall!

Tables range from 4-seaters to group tables, so it's really perfect for a family meal out.
Further inside, there's also a private room space.

For groups of 6 or more, you can reserve a room through Naver in advance for a more relaxed visit :) Even though it's charcoal grilling, it's surprisingly comfortable and doesn't smell smoky, so it's great for bringing along parents.
How Yuil Jangeo's farm-direct, pick-your-own system works
Yuil Jangeo is a farm-direct, self-grill eel restaurant.
The key is cutting out the middlemen to sell freshwater eel at the lowest prices nationwide!

You can see and pick the eels yourself from the fresh seafood display.

Pre-seared eel can also be packed to go! Delivery/shipping is available too!
This time, since it was three of us — my mom, my husband, and me — we picked the option with 4 eels weighing 4.8kg after trimming, which came to ₩51,810.
On top of that, we added the eel-packed eel soup for ₩9,900, plus a ₩4,000 table-setting fee x 3 people! Filling our stomachs with nothing but eel for this amount — how does that even make sense... haha.

People say the quality is just different from all-you-can-eat eel places, and once you pick your own eel here, you immediately understand why. You pay for the eel at the counter first, they pre-sear it and bring it to your table, and then you grill it yourself from there.

There are two self-serve bars — one near the kitchen, one near the rooms. Help yourself as much as you like!
Confident in its hygiene, Yuil Jangeo runs a proud open kitchen. I noticed they also make good use of a robot server.
Eating 4.8kg of charcoal-grilled eel: an honest review

First, the side dishes and a fierce charcoal fire come out.

The moment the pre-seared eel hits the charcoal, that savory aroma just hits you! It's self-grill, but if you're struggling, you can ask a staff member and they'll help.

We were fumbling too, so a passing staff member came over on their own and kindly grilled it for us. Haha.

My mom loved it too. ♥ One bite of that golden-brown grilled eel!

No fishy taste at all — clean, moist, and savory, so the three of us ate in focused silence. Lol.

It's also totally delicious piled on rice!

The side dishes are generous too, and you can freely refill shredded ginger and various sauces at the self-serve bar.
It's the best combo eaten with the shredded ginger! Wrapped in a lettuce leaf, it's never greasy and you keep reaching for more :)

Eel-packed eel soup for 9,900 won
We also added the eel-packed eel soup — ₩9,900, and it's loaded with eel meat!
Pouring a bowl of rice into that savory, warm broth felt like a proper energy boost for the body.
Rice and side dishes come with it too!
My mom said, "This soup is the real deal," and honestly, that's exactly the right description. +_+
Final verdict: is Yuil Jangeo worth it for three?
I've been twice now, and every time I think the same thing — this quality of eel at this price, what kind of value is this... haha.
The total for three people eating four eels plus eel soup until stuffed is about the same as a pork barbecue outing.

If you're looking for a good eel restaurant in Gwangsan, want to treat your parents to a nourishing meal, or want great-value summer health food, save Yuil Jangeo :)
I'll wrap up by mentioning my third visit is already booked. Highly recommend! ♥ The one downside is there can be a wait for weekend lunch, so I'd recommend showing up right at the 11am opening time!
