Cheongju Korean BBQ with a 30-person room: Hanmaeum

In short

Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang is a Korean barbecue restaurant in Osong, Cheongju, Chungbuk. Dandani and I enjoyed the 500g half-pig set, generous sides, and Mom’s Fried Rice, then looked around the 30-person rooms, kids’ zone, and smoking area. Verdict: a comfortable pick for company dinners, family meals, or dates.

The weather has been getting cooler lately, and I was craving aged meat with all that savory juice bursting out! So, for a little change of pace, I held Dandani’s hand tight and headed to Hanmaeum Jeongyuk Sikdang (한마음정육식당) Osong 2 Industrial Complex Branch, a much-talked-about Korean barbecue spot near Osong Station that’s great for company dinners.

The moment we walked in, the restaurant felt clean and spacious. The tables were nicely spread out and thoughtfully separated with partitions, so we could relax in total comfort without even a hint of chaos.

What especially made me think this place was perfect for company dinners or group gatherings was the private rooms! There are separate private spaces that accommodate from 6 to 30 people. They’re ideal for company dinners, team get-togethers, or big family meals when you want to enjoy yourselves privately without worrying about noise.

The second big win is something the men in your party may especially love at a company dinner: there’s a separate smoking area in a conveniently located corner of the restaurant! Definitely a point that speaks to the guys, right?

There’s also a well-equipped kids’ zone for families dining with little ones, so it works beautifully not only for group work dinners but also for weekend family gatherings!

A full table built around the 500g half-pig set

Half pig set (500g)

A quick look at the menu showed such a solid selection of sets and individual items, from aged pork to beef. The two of us chose the Half Pig Set (500g / ₩40,000), just right for eating properly together. It comes with a generous 500g of different cuts, including samgyeopsal (pork belly), pork neck, hangjeongsal (pork jowl), and gabrisal (pork collar), for ₩40,000—such good value, isn’t it?!

Then the basic side dishes arrived, neatly set out until the table was completely full. You could really feel the care put into every single one.

Neatly arranged basic side dishes

My favorite of the lot was this doenjang-jjigae (soybean-paste stew)! There’s a dedicated burner right beside the grill, so you can keep it bubbling and warm until the end of the meal. After adding chili peppers and giving it another boil, I thought it would be absolutely perfect as a soupy drinking snack at a company dinner too!

Crispy jeon (Korean savory pancake) comes as a basic side. What was unusual was the chewy jjolmyeon noodles piled on top of the pa-muchim (seasoned scallion salad). The chewy noodles and meat with that spicy, tangy dressing were unreal.

The freshly seasoned geotjeori (fresh kimchi) was crisp and so delicious too.

If you run short on sides, you can comfortably help yourself at the clean self-service bar, which is so handy.

They also brought bracken fern shoots to grill alongside the meat. Browning them in the pork fat and wrapping them up with the meat brought out their nutty flavor, and they were so moreish that I kept reaching for more.

I placed a perfectly cooked piece of meat on lettuce, added grilled bracken, garlic, and jjolmyeon scallion salad, then wrapped it all up and took a huge bite. Not even a trace of gaminess, just bursting juices and pure tenderness!! Dandani beside me loved it too and said it was delicious.

With meat this good and all these wraps, not having beer would be rude, right?!

Beer ordered with the meat

I couldn’t resist, so we ordered beer right away, clinked glasses, and drank it nice and cold. Ahh... 👍🏻 Delicious meat and icy beer together made all the stress melt away. Isn’t this what makes life good? 😉

Castella pork rind from the visitor review event

And here’s a tip you absolutely should not miss: if you join the Naver visitor review event, they give you castella pork rind on the house! We got the receipt right away and made sure to claim ours. The scoring is sharp and neat, making the outside crisp like a cracker, while the inside is moist, chewy, and nutty like castella cake. Be sure to join and try it!

Mom’s Fried Rice

You know a meal isn’t over without fried rice for K-dessert, right? To finish, we added Mom’s Fried Rice (₩5,000) and scraped up every last bit of the crispy scorched rice.

The nostalgic margarine, nutty seaweed flakes, and special sauce come together so addictively that it keeps going down even when you’re already full!
