Paju Korean restaurant for family mandu soup: Bubyeokjeong

Lots of you are planning a weekend outing with your child to the outlets or publishing complex around Paju, right? After all that walking around, you’re hungry—but finding a restaurant where the kids will eat well and the adults will be happy too is like finding a star in the sky. To my fellow mandu (Korean dumpling) obsessives who go crazy for northern-style mandu: we waited 45 minutes to eat here, and instead of being annoyed, my husband and I raved that skipping it would be a life loss!

I arrived at exactly 1 p.m. on the weekend—peak time. Wow... there were seriously so many people! Our waiting number was 104, with an estimated 45-minute wait.

The good news was that there are Parking Lots 1 and 2. We headed to Lot 2 and found plenty of spaces! No parking stress, so don’t worry!

Long waits can wear you out, but Bubyeokjeong’s waiting room is on another scale. There is a separate, spacious tented waiting area outside, and they had the air-conditioning blasting so hard that we stayed incredibly comfortable the entire time. Paju locals...

It was a restaurant recommended by a friend, and according to a local, it is always busy ^-^ They said it was absolutely worth the wait, so wait we did. Yep. Hahahahahahahaha

We finally got in! The interior is huge, with a traditional yet polished, warm feel. There is plenty of room to bring a stroller inside when you visit with a child.

In one corner of the restaurant, staff keep folding mandu without end, and you can watch it all live through a glass window! It gave me such confidence in their cleanliness.

The self-service corner was perfectly stocked with extra side dishes, broth for jeongol (Korean hot pot), spare tableware, and even baby tableware. It was so convenient to grab anything we needed during the meal without feeling self-conscious.

There were plenty of sturdy high chairs, and the separate men’s and women’s restrooms were very clean too—Bubyeokjeong is fully approved as a great Paju Unjeong restaurant for visiting with children! There were lots of couples, but seeing the place packed with large family groups bringing their elders made me think, “Ah, this really is the real deal.”

The menu is simple: mandu dishes and side dishes. At the next table, a mother and daughter were praising the nokdu bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) so much while eating it that I want to try it next time.

They do takeout too, so please, please get some to go!! I didn’t this time, and now I’m seriously considering going back to Paju just for it.

Kids’ mandu-guk ₩6,000

First, kids’ mandu-guk for our Senei! This is the kind of menu item that makes parenting moms scream. At most mandu-guk restaurants, ordering an extra bowl for your child obviously means leftovers, but sharing yours means you end up short—everyone has been there, right? Here, they thoughtfully have a separate kids’ portion! It comes with exactly two mandu in a light broth plus a bowl of rice, and it is only ₩6,000—a total bargain! Senei put her face right in the bowl and finished it all by herself.

Korean beef jjabagi ₩14,000

And then, my long-awaited pick: Korean beef jjabagi! The Korean beef jjabagi was completely delicious ♥ At northern-style mandu restaurants, the dishes are usually all mild, so I often crave something spicy. This dish absolutely crushes that disappointment. Its rich, spicy broth is like yukgaejang (spicy beef soup), packed—seriously packed!—with Korean beef, and it includes two mandu too, so one bowl is incredibly filling. I hadn’t even had a drink the night before, but this deep flavor felt like a hangover cure anyway ♥

Pyeongyang mandu-guk ₩11,000

The Pyeongyang mandu-guk my husband ordered has a base similar to the kids’ version, but with a lightly spicy topping on top. It comes with four mandu. What truly convinced me that Bubyeokjeong is a great restaurant was this: usually, after spicy soup, a mild broth tastes like nothing. But after I had been eating the Korean beef jjabagi for a while, my husband told me to try a spoonful, and I could still taste the broth’s deep flavor.

Lastly, the most basic of basics: Pyeongyang plate mandu! With northern-style mandu, the tofu ratio is everything, right? Too much tofu and they taste fishy; too little and they are dry. Bubyeokjeong absolutely nails that golden balance!

These were among the best northern-style mandu I have had: light, yet wonderfully full of filling!

In the lobby, they have five kinds of old-fashioned snacks and misutgaru (a roasted grain drink) ready for you!

The misutgaru was so rich and nutty that there was no need to go to a café afterward. A sweet cup made both my stomach and my heart feel full—the perfect ending.

The long wait did not feel wasteful at all; if anything, it made me feel that not coming here would be a life loss! If you are looking for a Paju Lotte Outlet restaurant where the whole family can have a hearty meal during a Paju outing, you absolutely have to visit Bubyeokjeong Pyeongyang Mandu!
