Dangjin food alley squid restaurant: stir-fry and steamed egg
In short
Ojjingeo Dangjin (오찡어 당진점) is a squid restaurant tucked inside the Daedeok-dong food alley in Dangjin, Chungnam. On a meal out, a couple ordered the original-flavor squid stir-fry, squid tangsuyuk (sweet and sour fried squid) and steamed egg, and especially loved how the savory sauce, fresh onion and cabbage, and plump squid came together. Verdict: the squid stir-fry alone makes Ojjingeo Dangjin worth a return visit.

Is Ojjingeo Dangjin spacious? Does it have private rooms?
The restaurant was bigger than I expected, with regular tables and also private rooms. It looked good for family gatherings or company dinners.

Ojjingeo menu and how to order
Besides squid stir-fry, Ojjingeo Dangjin offers squid pancake, squid tangsuyuk, squid hot pot, boiled pork (suyuk) and set menus. As you'd expect from a squid specialist, the variety is wide, and with a lunch special and add-on items it seems like a good lunch stop too.

Ordering is easy with the tablet on the table!

The staff set out the basic side dishes right away. For extras there is a self-serve bar, so if you run out you can just go grab more.

How spicy is Ojjingeo's original-flavor squid stir-fry?
The original-flavor squid stir-fry was pleasantly spicy, at a level anyone can enjoy. It came out faster than I expected, and the sweet-and-spicy aroma rising from the red sauce the moment it arrived really got my appetite going!

My mouth was watering just looking at it,, Besides the squid, there were big chunks of onion, green onion and cabbage, and the colors alone made them look fresh. They weren't wilted too much, so they seemed to keep a nice crunch.

We ordered the original flavor, and it was pleasantly spicy, at a level anyone can enjoy!

The staff told us to just cut the squid legs into bite-size pieces, so my husband worked hard on that, haha

The sauce is the key to Ojjingeo's squid stir-fry
The sauce really is the heart of Ojjingeo's squid stir-fry. It isn't just spicy; the sweetness and savory depth blend so well that my chopsticks kept going back. Especially when you mix the sauce into rice, it's a total rice thief (so good you keep eating rice) 😭 I want it again!

The squid was thick and plump, with a springy bite that held up as I chewed, and it wasn't tough at all. I could taste the clean sweetness of fresh squid, and the sauce soaked in well, so every bite was satisfying.
Above all, the onion and cabbage were really fresh. They kept their crunch, which made the dish even richer in texture with the squid, and their natural sweetness blended perfectly with the sauce.

How is Ojjingeo's squid tangsuyuk different from regular tangsuyuk?
Ojjingeo's squid tangsuyuk (sweet and sour fried dish) has big, plump pieces of squid inside a crispy coating, which gives it a different charm from regular tangsuyuk. I was surprised by how large the pieces were when I first saw them.

The sweet and sour sauce went well with the crispy batter, and the chewy squid texture as you bite makes it a definitely different kind of fun from pork tangsuyuk.

The batter wasn't too thick either, so you can really taste the natural texture of the squid.

Steamed egg that pairs well with the squid stir-fry
Ojjingeo's steamed egg is so moist that it goes perfectly with the spicy squid stir-fry. The steamed egg came out last, and it was so moist, I loved it,, There was a little broth pooled around it, so it was easy to scoop up smoothly, and the egg flavor was rich.
Is Ojjingeo Dangjin worth going back to?
Ojjingeo Dangjin is a place I'd go back to for the squid stir-fry alone! I especially loved the combination of the savory sauce, fresh vegetables and plump squid, and mixing the sauce into rice let me enjoy it to the very end. The squid tangsuyuk is an unusual dish too, so it's a good one to order alongside, and I recommend it if you're looking for squid dishes in Daedeok-dong! 🦑
