Yeoju IC dakgalbi and doenjang jjigae, not makguksu: Seorak Makguksu

In short

Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yeoju IC Branch is a charcoal-grilled dakgalbi (seasoned grilled chicken) restaurant at 483 Sejong-ro in Yeoju, Gyeonggi, right beside the Sejong-ro overpass. Charcoal seasoned dakgalbi costs 16,000 won for a 250g single portion, pre-grilled in the kitchen and then finished at the table by staff, and the writer skipped the usual makguksu for doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) at 4,000 won, spicy enough to warrant a bottle of Chamisul soju. Cabbage and sauce were refilled three or four times, and the very large dedicated parking lot meant no parking worries even at peak time.

Charcoal dakgalbi, not stir-fried, near Yeoju Premium Outlets

Today I visited a dakgalbi (grilled chicken) place near the Yeoju outlets. This isn't the kind where you throw cabbage on a pan and stir-fry it — this is Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yeoju IC Branch, a place I really want to tell people about because it's grilled over real charcoal.

Pre-grilled seasoned dakgalbi finishing over charcoal

The pre-grilled dakgalbi finishes cooking beautifully over the charcoal. A staff member grills it a second time for you.

How big is the parking lot, and what is the dining room like?

Large dedicated parking lot in front of the restaurant

Located right of the overpass past the intersection, Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi has a seriously huge parking lot. No matter when you visit, there's always plenty of space, no parking worries at all. Even during peak hours, the lot is more than enough.

Spacious interior seating with ventilation system

The seating is spacious and the ventilation is excellent, so there's no worry about smelling like smoke even after a long stay. Since staff do the second round of grilling on the pre-grilled meat, there's barely any burning or lingering smell. Perfect for charcoal dakgalbi.

I went right when break time ended, thinking we'd be first — but three other tables were already seated. Surprised me, haha~~!!

The spicy signature charcoal seasoned dakgalbi, 250g per serving — after grilling, there's a clever trick to keep it from burning on the charcoal. It stays warm without burning, which was such a smart touch. I think other places will copy this grill setup. Two thumbs up for the clever idea 👍

Fully grilled dakgalbi ready to eat

When we tried to grill it ourselves, the staff member said, "It'll probably taste better if we grill it for you~~" and carefully grilled each piece with such attention so nothing burned. I was really grateful — if we'd done it ourselves, we probably would've burned it...

Side dishes at Seorak Makguksu: the cabbage and dipping sauce steal the show

Full spread of basic side dishes served with the dakgalbi

Plate of cabbage served with sauce

Among the standard side dishes, the cabbage served with dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) and sauce was the best. Everything else was typical, but the cabbage with its sauce was truly outstanding. Once you try it, you keep eating it — I think we refilled it three or four times.

You know the drill — whatever you're short on or need, you refill yourself. You'll end up eating the cabbage many times over. It's genuinely delicious with the sauce, and it pairs perfectly with dakgalbi.

Doenjang jjigae for 4,000 won instead of makguksu

A bottle of soju enjoyed alongside the doenjang jjigae

Today we had doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) instead of makguksu. It's ₩4,000. Honestly, though, it was basically doenjang drinking soup — we ended up ordering an extra bottle of Chamisul (soju). After the meat and the makguksu, you really should try the doenjang jjigae too. It was spicy and rich, genuinely delicious hahaha. Adding a bottle of soju while eating doenjang jjigae, of all things~~ haha

Is Seorak Makguksu Yeoju IC Branch worth a stop?

Turn right out of Yeoju IC, go straight, and it's right on the right side near the overpass — Seorak Makguksu Chuncheon Dakgalbi Yeoju IC Branch. I feel like the era of having to go all the way to Chuncheon for good dakgalbi is over. Charcoal-grilled dakgalbi tastes especially special here in Yeoju.

No hassle of grilling it yourself — the pre-grilled system with staff finishing it tableside, plus that clever grill-plate trick that keeps the temperature steady without burning~ charcoal-grilled Chuncheon dakgalbi~~ The flavor held up all the way through the meal, and I was so won over by the doenjang jjigae that I ordered another bottle of soju — which, in my view, says a lot about how good this dakgalbi place is.

Instead of the stir-fried, pan-cooked kind, try charcoal-grilled dakgalbi with your kids, your parents, or good company. It had been a while since I had proper dakgalbi — charcoal dakgalbi at that — and I'm leaving this honest review. Five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐, fully recommended 👍👍👍👍👍.
