Family dinner with kids at Cheonho charcoal chicken galbi: Ondogye
In short
Ondogye is a charcoal-grilled chicken galbi restaurant in the jjukkumi (spicy octopus) alley near Cheonho Station in Gangdong, Seoul. On a third visit after moving to Cheonho, the family ordered two servings of garlic salt chicken galbi, two of soy sauce chicken galbi, cheese steamed egg, and grilled chicken neck meat, with staff grilling and cutting the meat all the way through so the kids could eat easily. With sauces that are never too strong, Ondogye is a good pick for a family meal out with children.

Ondogye, charcoal chicken galbi near Cheonho Station: the basics
- Name: Ondogye
- Location: 15 Cheonho-daero 158-gil, 1st floor, Gangdong-gu, Seoul
- Hours: Daily 16:00 – 23:00 (last order 22:00)

Third visit: the place that grills the meat all the way for you
Ondogye, a Cheonho favorite for charcoal-grilled chicken galbi. This is our third visit since we moved to Cheonho. We come back regularly because it's just that good haha ✌🏻 The interior is clean and comfortable too.
Another reason Ondogye is a Cheonho favorite: the staff grill the meat all the way to the end for you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
📍To get there, come out Exit 6 of Cheonho Station (Lines 5 and 8), and it's a 5-minute walk, located inside the jjukkumi (spicy octopus) alley.

With the kids along, we ordered garlic salt and soy sauce
The menu has garlic salt, soy sauce, spicy sauce, and chicken neck meat 🐓 Since we had the kids with us, we ordered two servings of garlic salt, two of soy sauce, and a steamed egg for the kids 🥚

Standard side dishes: pickled radish, green onion kimchi, green onion salad
The standard side dishes are pickled radish, green onion kimchi, and green onion salad 🌶️ Every single side dish is delicious. My husband, who loves green onion kimchi, ate an unbelievable amount of it. Wrapping the chicken galbi in pickled radish gives you that sweet-salty combo that's just so good.

Fried chicken gizzard, served as standard
They give you fried chicken gizzard as standard 🐔 It came out freshly fried, so crispy and delicious. My son, trying gizzard for the first time, said it was good and ate it enthusiastically 👏🏻 He kept saying it was a little spicy but delicious, and kept eating it haha 😂

Garlic salt chicken galbi x2: the softness of the thigh meat
Two servings of garlic salt chicken galbi 🐔 The chicken galbi comes out pre-seared. Ondogye's chicken galbi is made entirely of thigh meat, so it's pure softness. There's no dry meat at all, so even people who dislike chicken breast would be satisfied with this.

The staff grilled and cut all the meat for us, so we could eat very comfortably. Since they cut everything and pull aside the pieces ready to eat, you don't have to keep worrying about the meat burning and can just focus on the taste.

The garlic salt chicken galbi has a salty, roasted chicken flavor 🐤 There's really no gamey smell at all, and it's coated in a savory charcoal aroma that makes it so delicious. Since the meat is all thigh meat, none of it is tough or dry. It's so tender that even the kids ate it very well.

Soy sauce chicken galbi has a subtle soy fragrance
The second one out was the soy sauce chicken galbi. Though it's soy sauce-based, it's never overpowering or too salty — it's the style with a subtle soy fragrance woven through. Grilled over charcoal, the smoky aroma gets absorbed and doubles the flavor of the chicken galbi.

Doenjang stew and cheese-topped steamed egg
Doenjang (soybean paste) stew comes as standard, and we ordered a steamed egg for the kids too. The steamed egg had cheese on top, which the kids loved even more. The fluffy steamed egg had good seasoning, and with the cheese added, the savory flavor was the best. Mixed into the kids' rice, they ate it up happily.

Finishing with grilled chicken neck meat and rice cake
For the final palate cleanser, we ordered grilled chicken neck meat 🐓 The chicken neck has a chewy texture and salty flavor, making it perfect as a side dish with rice or as a drinking snack 👏🏻👏🏻 If you like chicken neck meat, you'll definitely love this.

The grilled garaetteok (cylindrical rice cake) and mushrooms served alongside were also delicious. Grilling the rice cake over charcoal makes the outside crispy and the inside chewy, the kind of flavor that keeps your hand reaching back for more. I think I ate all the rice cake myself haha 😂
Unlike other chicken galbi restaurants, Ondogye, a Cheonho favorite, stands out for being grilled over charcoal with a smoky aroma and made entirely of thigh meat, keeping it very tender, and the sauces are never excessive or too strong, making it a great place for kids and adults to eat out together. Today's family outing to Ondogye was a big success 👍🏻 Ate well again today ✌🏻
