Chicken galbi restaurant near Cheonho Station with dongdongju: Ondogye

In short

Ondogye is a charcoal chicken galbi restaurant in Gangdong, Seoul, a five-minute walk from Cheonho Station exit 6 and across from Cheonho Rodeo Street. On a weekend visit at 4:30pm, the staff grilled both the soy sauce and the spicy charcoal chicken galbi from start to finish, served with complimentary chicken gizzards and doenjang stew alongside a 5,000 won bowl of dongdongju (unfiltered rice wine). Ondogye suits an evening work dinner or group gathering where you would rather talk than turn the meat yourself.

I was in Cheonho Station looking for something to eat besides jjukkumi (spicy stir-fried octopus) when I came across a different kind of chicken galbi. Normally chicken galbi is fun to grill and stir yourself, but honestly, all that flipping and grilling gets a bit tiresome. Then I saw a lot of reviews saying the staff here grill it for you the whole way through. "Oh, so I could just eat comfortably?" I thought, and decided to check it out.

Full grilling service: the staff cook everything for you

What I appreciated most was the full-service grilling — staff grill the meat from start to finish. Seasoned meat is easy to burn, but with an expert doing the grilling, all the juices stayed locked in, and I could really just focus on the conversation and the food.

Soy sauce charcoal chicken galbi

First up was the soy sauce charcoal chicken galbi, and it was clean and light. A subtle charcoal aroma spread through the air right away. They said it's 100% domestic chicken, and the quality showed — fresh, with no dryness at all, soft and moist like thigh meat. The garlic soy sauce seasoning wasn't overly sweet or salty, just balanced enough that I kept reaching for more without getting tired of it.

Next, I ordered the spicy seasoned chicken galbi, and I understood right away why chef Lee Won-il apparently praised it. It's not a tongue-numbing spicy — it's a delicious kind of spicy, and the seasoning soaked all the way into the tender meat with great smoky flavor. It had a charm all its own compared to pan-grilled chicken galbi. The fat rendered off nicely over the open flame, leaving a texture that was crisp on the outside and soft inside — a textbook example of that contrast.

On the side, they brought out chicken gizzard on the house, and it was a real treat — no gamey smell at all, just clean flavor with a crunchy, chewy bite every time. The complimentary doenjang stew (soybean paste soup) also paired really well with the chicken galbi.

Dongdongju served alongside the chicken galbi

Adding a glass of chilled dongdongju made the combination complete. Its mellow, nutty rice aroma went down smoothly and washed away the spice and richness of the chicken galbi. Since I can't hold my liquor well, I had them mix in a little cider (+₩2,000). By the way, this place has free corkage, so one bottle of alcohol can be brought in for free — next time I might bring along whatever I'm in the mood for.

Is Ondogye good for a work dinner or group gathering?

The staff's friendly service really stood out. The music 🎵 was good too, which made the meal even more enjoyable. On a day when you're craving a good evening meal with moist meat soaked in charcoal aroma, I'd recommend Ondogye — easy to get to and a genuine charcoal chicken galbi favorite. There's also an annex ready for company dinners, group gatherings, and parties.
