Sokcho sashimi takeaway for two: Jinmi Hwareo Center

In short

Jinmi Hwareo Center is a sashimi restaurant at the underground entrance of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market in Sokcho, Gangwon. We packed a two-person farmed amberjack and flounder platter to eat at our accommodation, and liked the generous portion and thick-cut texture.

While looking around Sokcho Jungang Market, we also picked up sashimi to eat at our accommodation. Jinmi Hwareo Center (진미활어센터), the place we visited, was in the basement of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market. We chose amberjack and flounder for two, and I liked that they sliced the fish right where we ordered.

Guide to visiting Jinmi Hwareo Center at Sokcho Tourist Fishery Market

I learned about this place through a friend in Sokcho. I had always only looked around Jungang Market, but downstairs there was a larger seafood market than I expected.

The tank water looked clean, and there was a wide range of seafood, including flounder, rockfish, amberjack, and sea squirts.

Jinmi Hwareo Center was easy to find because it was near the entrance after going down to the basement.

There was also a space to eat inside the restaurant. We chose takeaway because we planned to eat at our accommodation.

How did we order a sashimi platter for two?

The menu separated prices for wild-caught and farmed assorted sashimi. We could also check the country-of-origin labels.

We wanted Korean-sourced fish, so we checked the labels and chose amberjack and flounder. After telling them it was for two people, we ordered a two-person farmed assorted sashimi platter to take away.

They sliced and packed the sashimi in front of us, so we took it straight back to our accommodation. It was nice to be able to watch it being prepared.

Can you get a parking voucher for the market lot?

We parked in the market parking lot and received a parking voucher from the restaurant. It was convenient to look around the market and then pick up sashimi in the same trip.

What were the portion and takeaway items like?

When we opened the package at our accommodation, there was more than I expected. It felt generous enough that I wondered whether the two of us could finish it.

The sashimi had a sheen and looked fresh even before we ate it.

It came with ssamjang (seasoned soybean paste), chojang (sweet-tangy red chili dipping sauce), garlic, peppers, soy sauce, wasabi, and lettuce. We could eat comfortably at our accommodation without buying extra accompaniments.

That day, the owner also gave us sea squirts as a complimentary extra. They are seafood my boyfriend likes, and when we tried them, they did not taste fishy.

How were the textures of the amberjack and flounder?

The amberjack was chewier and springier than I expected. Its bite was especially memorable.

The flounder was springy rather than dry. It was cut thickly, which gave it a satisfying chew.

The vegetables that came with it also felt fresh. We put sashimi on lettuce with ssamjang, and because the ssamjang suited our taste, we kept eating it as ssam (lettuce wraps).

For this takeaway order, I was satisfied with the thick-cut sashimi and the generous-feeling portion. It was also convenient to stop by while exploring Jungang Market and pick up sashimi to eat at our accommodation.
