Sokcho seafood shop for a family market dinner: Yes Susan

In short

Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market Large Parking Lot is a seafood shop in Sokcho’s tourist and fishery market. I picked up a ₩25,000 two-red-snow-crab lunchbox and a flying-fish-roe marinated-crab fried-rice set to share with other market foods; the prepared crab was convenient, though our bag had no utensils or disposable gloves.

How was the red snow crab lunchbox with several market foods?

During my trip to Sokcho, I stopped by Sokcho Jungang Market to pack up dinner before checking into our accommodation. We were planning to get other foods such as dakgangjeong (sweet crispy fried chicken) and snack foods too, so ordering a full crab spread separately felt a little excessive in both quantity and price. We still wanted to try crab, so I chose a red snow crab lunchbox from Yes Susan.

Where is Yes Susan in the market?

Yes Susan is in Unit 124 on the first floor of Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market, the official name of Sokcho Jungang Market. From the underground parking entrance, I headed toward the shops along the main road on the left, behind the rest area. Each shop was numbered, so finding Unit 124 was easier than I expected.

The address is 16 Jungang-ro 147beon-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon State, South Korea. The original post lists hours as 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM, with Tuesdays closed.

Which lunchbox did I choose on a weekend afternoon, and how much was it?

I visited around 5 PM on a weekend. Prepared red snow crabs were displayed as lunchboxes at the counter, and it was convenient to look at them and choose one right away.

Unfortunately, there were no king crab lunchboxes left when I visited; only red snow crab lunchboxes remained. They started at ₩25,000, with prices varying by crab type, number of crabs, and size. We chose the ₩25,000 lunchbox with two red snow crabs, which the children picked out. For our family, who would also be eating other market foods, this was the right amount.

What fried rice did I pack with it?

I could add crab-shell fried rice for ₩2,000 each. I considered having it cooked fresh, but there was a ready-made flying-fish-roe marinated-crab fried-rice set beside it, so I chose the ₩8,000 set.

The set included rice and stir-fried kimchi. It was an easy way to add a rice dish when we laid out other market foods at our accommodation, and the fried rice alongside the red snow crab lunchbox made it feel like a full meal.

Was it easy to eat at our accommodation?

The food was packed neatly in a shopping bag, and the service was friendly.

When I opened it at our accommodation, each red snow crab leg had been prepared. I did not need scissors, and it was fairly easy to pull out the meat.

The crab shells had also been cut in half. Eating the fried rice with the innards gave me the satisfying feeling that I had tried crab in Sokcho.

We were not looking for an elaborate full spread of steamed king crab, so this amount worked well alongside other foods.

However, our bag did not include utensils or disposable gloves. Other reviews said they had been included, so I wondered whether they had been left out, but I was not able to confirm why.

Still, the red snow crab itself was well prepared, so it was not especially difficult to eat.

What family dinner combination did it suit?

After trying it, I thought this worked best not as a dinner made up of crab alone, but alongside several market foods packed up to eat together at our accommodation.

We also bought dakgangjeong and other market foods that day. Laying out several dishes and adding the red snow crab lunchbox and fried rice completed our family dinner. It was a good way to add one lunchbox when a large steamed-crab spread felt like too much.

At the time of my visit, I could choose one from ₩25,000, which eased the price burden somewhat, and the prepared crab was convenient to eat at our accommodation. It suited our family, who wanted to try crab while sharing several market foods with the children.
