Jeonju street-food stall for cheesy fried octopus: Munkkocchi

In short

Munkkocchi Mungangjeong is a street-food stall in Jeonju Hanok Village, Jeonbuk, serving octopus skewers and fried octopus bites. We shared mild cheese mungangjeong for 9,500 won, katsuobushi octopus skewers for 5,000 won, and self-serve slushies. A fun, easy octopus snack stop while exploring the village.

Whenever you visit Jeonju Hanok Village, you are bound to run into street food. It's been that way for ages... I especially used to see lots of munkkocchi (octopus skewer) stalls. This time, I visited one across from the Donghak Memorial Hall.

I've always liked octopus, so if I spot mungangjeong (fried, sauced octopus bites), I tend to eat it as I walk by... Do you know mungangjeong? Munkkocchi is everywhere, after all!

Mungangjeong octopus street snack

Munkkocchi has no batter, while mungangjeong is fried octopus brushed with sauce and topped with cheese or katsuobushi (bonito flakes), so it has a different charm from an octopus skewer.

A tempting choice if you're looking for an easy bite to eat in Hanok Village.

It's in a great spot to pop into while wandering the Hanok Village alleys. If you park at the Hanok Village parking lot and walk down, you'll come across Donghak Memorial Hall—and it's right in front of it. Park in Hanok Village Lots 1 or 2 and you'll see it on the way down.

It's a good location to visit before heading to the main Hanok Village thoroughfare, or on your way back. Even though it's tucked away, there was a constant line, so it felt like it must be good.

  • Cheese mungangjeong: ₩9,500
  • Katsuobushi munkkocchi: ₩5,000
  • Both mungangjeong and munkkocchi are available with cheese or katsuobushi
  • Choose mild or spicy
  • Sangha Farm ice cream, house-made sikhye (sweet rice drink), and slushy beer are also sold
Seating area beside the stall

There is also a small space right beside the stall where you can sit and eat, which was nice—not having to stand off in some corner... Hanok Village street food is all great, but because it is street food, lots of places don't have anywhere to sit... Having somewhere like this to sit is so nice..

Cheese mungangjeong, katsuobushi munkkocchi, and slushies

Cheese mungangjeong, katsuobushi octopus skewers, and slushies

Since we were sharing, I ordered both mungangjeong and munkkocchi for some variety! It said five minutes after ordering, and true to street-food form, it came out quickly without much waiting.

Cheese mungangjeong: crispy, with stretchy cheese

The mungangjeong comes in easy one-bite pieces, so it was simple to pick up one at a time, and the outside was nice and crispy. They say they use natural cheese containing at least 99% mozzarella, so it felt reassuring to eat. They gave us a generous amount of cheese too, and it stretched and stretched—such a happy feeling.

I usually like katsuobushi mungangjeong, but the cheese version looked pretty good even before I tried it. I couldn't pick a winner..

Munkkocchi with a generous shower of katsuobushi

Munkkocchi is such a regular Hanok Village street snack that I ordered it too. I considered cheese munkkocchi, but since I had ordered cheese mungangjeong, I chose the katsuobushi one. They really didn't hold back on the bonito flakes either, which was lovely.

With bonito flakes over the golden-grilled octopus, it looked like proper street food from the start. Honestly haha, cheese feels like the classic choice for munkkocchi, but the katsuobushi was tastier than I expected?

Both the munkkocchi and mungangjeong had big pieces of octopus with a satisfyingly chewy bite, so I recommend trying them if you like octopus. We ordered both mild, but I thought one spicy order would be tasty too? Keep that in mind if you're ordering two.

Self-serve slushies in summer

Mango, green apple, and strawberry self-serve slushies

It was so hot that we ordered a slushy to have alongside everything. There are mango, green apple, and strawberry flavors. Only after ordering did I notice they had sikhye too ㅠ haha

Still, street food means slushies, right? We had the sweet slushy too, and it was actually a pretty good pairing with the munkkocchi and mungangjeong.

Self-serve slushy made by mixing flavors

After paying, you make your own slushy using the cups beside the counter. Doing it yourself was kind of fun, and the good thing is that you can mix as many flavors as you want. Kids seemed to especially love it?

Boxed mungangjeong for takeaway

If you've only tried munkkocchi in Hanok Village, I recommend trying mungangjeong too. It comes in a box, so it is a little neater to eat, and it is great for taking away and sharing.

Octopus street food enjoyed in Jeonju Hanok Village

Whether you're visiting Hanok Village or you're from Jeonju and drop by now and then, grabbing some street food makes it feel a bit like you're traveling, doesn't it? If you want that travel feeling as a Jeonju local, or you're a little peckish while touring Hanok Village, it might be nice to check out munkkocchi or mungangjeong.
