I visited Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch (미꼬담 마곡발산점), a great place to look up when you want a neat Korean meal around Magok or Balsan. I already absolutely love Korean set meals, so whenever I need a little boost I make sure to seek one out—and this place was seriously clean and delicious!!

A great atmosphere for a family meal near Balsan Station
Mikodam Magok-Balsan Branch is easy to reach from Balsan Station, so it is nicely located when you are looking for somewhere to eat around Magok or Balsan. The atmosphere also felt comfortably suited to a family meal or bringing your parents along, so I thought it would be a good match for anyone who likes places like this.
Once inside, everything was bright, clean, and neatly arranged. The tables were spaced fairly generously too, with a nice atmosphere for families to dine in. This is actually a place often mentioned for family gatherings and get-togethers,

and they also have separate private-room spaces. There was a tablet at the table, which made it convenient to order or request side-dish refills. A Korean set-meal restaurant can sound a little intimidating or formal, but Mikodam felt more like a comfortable way to enjoy a full table spread. It would be a wonderful fit for a special gathering or anniversary.

A set for two with seaweed soup, cockle bibimbap, and a side
Mikodam has à la carte dishes too, but ordering the set for two lets you have seaweed soup, cockle bibimbap (rice mixed with cockles), and a side dish all at once, so it is easy to order when two people visit. (Of course, they also have sets for three and four.)

The set for two comes with one serving of seaweed soup, one serving of cockle bibimbap, and one side dish, for ₩46,000.

For the seaweed soup, you can choose beef, flounder, or abalone, and we went with beef seaweed soup. Cockle bibimbap comes in either savory soy sauce or chojang flavor, and we decided on the soy sauce! After debating the side dishes, we picked yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef). (For two adults.)

You can get rolled omelet through a review event! Amazing.
Meal prep complete!

A set meal that filled the whole table
And then the set for two arrived,,! Amazing, right,,, It felt like being treated.
Spicy stir-fried pork and japchae (stir-fried glass noodles).

Chicory salad and three kinds of seasoned vegetables.
Plus heaping bowls of rice,

What was the cockle bibimbap like?
The cockle bibimbap, included as standard in the set for two, arrived as well.

Maybe because it is another of Mikodam’s signature dishes, it had plenty of cockle meat, and you mix it with the rice before eating.

My partner and I are not really into shellfish;; but we both opened our eyes wide and ate it so happily. Wait,, cockles can taste this good? Mikodam must just be really good at them,,!

Wrapping it up in roasted dried seaweed was seriously—so good ✨

Tender yukjeon paired with seasoned chives
And then there was the yukjeon we chose as our side. This dish pairs golden pan-fried beef yukjeon with seasoned chives. It had a wonderfully nutty, tender texture. Sometimes you come across tough ones, but this was not tough at all and chewed softly, so it was great with rice too.
Personally, the yukjeon was much tastier eaten with the seasoned chives than on its own. The sweet-tangy flavor of the chives added to the nutty richness of the yukjeon and really woke up my appetite.

Then mustard cold salad, fresh napa cabbage kimchi, and pickled onions. Roasted seaweed and soy sauce too! But it did not end there.

A whole mackerel arrives, beautifully golden from the grill.

The mackerel was plump and grilled so well—nutty and nicely salty, and truly delicious with rice. ㅠㅠ Honestly, I can eat a ton of rice with just one whole mackerel hahaha, so getting to enjoy all of this too ㅠㅠ I love you, Mikodam 🎉
A satisfying bowl of mild beef seaweed soup
And most importantly! Since the name Mikodam itself comes from miyeokguk (seaweed soup) and cockles, seaweed soup is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes. That day, I chose the beef version.
When I took a spoonful of the warm broth, it was not overpowering; it had a savory, deep flavor. With seaweed soup done this properly, I thought it would be so, so nice to come here on a birthday.
Personally, when seaweed soup is too salty or greasy, I get tired of it after a few spoonfuls. This one was comparatively mild, though, so I polished off a whole bowl just like that..! There was a ton of beef in it too 💖
And nearly all of the side dishes could be refilled; the fact that japchae and spicy stir-fried pork could be refilled without an extra charge was...! Amazing. The value is seriously excellent 👏

After eating there that day, it felt like a great place for a day when you want a neat, complete Korean meal. With the set for two bringing seaweed soup, cockle bibimbap, and a side together, the table felt full, the portions were generous, and it gave that “I had a proper meal today” feeling hahaha. Mikodam is a place I think of when dining with my parents around Magok or Balsan, or when I want a tidy Korean table spread. I ate so, so well.
