Wandering slowly through the alleys of Yeonnam-dong, a little away from the busy city center, I stumbled on a place bursting with European charm. It was Butter & Shelter Yeonnam, a café well-known for its handmade butter sands. Even before stepping inside, the cozy brick building and quiet front yard caught my eye, and the moment I opened the door, the distinct nutty aroma of butter rushed out and my expectations soared.

Inside the remodeled house: a cozy European-style interior

True to its origins as a remodeled house, Butter & Shelter has a cozy yet exotic atmosphere. The classic red brick tiles laid out front and the charming outdoor yard, dotted with terrace tables, looked perfect for lounging over dessert on a sunny day or when a cool breeze picks up.

Stepping inside, I found a classic mirror display along with beautifully wrapped butter sand samples arranged with real style. Warm lighting spread softly through the space, harmonizing beautifully with deep wood-toned furniture — a spot that works well both for enjoying some solo downtime and as a stop on a Yeonnam-dong date or a Hongdae outing.

Heading over to the counter and display case to order, I could feel just how seriously they take their desserts. On one side of the store, origin labels for the desserts and detailed nutrition tables — based on daily reference values per 100g — were neatly posted, which boosted my trust in the place considerably. Being able to carefully check the ingredients and nutrition info for each menu item is a big plus for anyone mindful of health or calories.

Inside the case was a feast for the eyes — everything from dainty cookies to Basque cheesecake and mango cream cake. But what stood out most, without question, were Butter & Shelter's signature butter sands.

After a long deliberation in front of the display case, I decided to properly try the whole signature lineup. I picked all five butter sand flavors — from the raspberry cream cheese to the original — and ordered an iced café latte to bring out the nutty richness of the desserts.

A little while later, the five gorgeous-looking butter sands arrived on a plate alongside a fragrant, nutty café latte. Each butter sand was carefully wrapped individually in cute paper stamped with the brand logo — neat and tidy from the start. Between the crisp, nutty cookie dough baked with French gourmet butter, a thick layer of handmade cream and filling was sandwiched.

First up was the raspberry cream cheese sand, and the combination of tartness and nuttiness was easily the best of the bunch. The sweet-tart raspberry jam paired with the heavy cream cheese to give the butter flavor even more depth. Then came a parade of different flavors: the glacage with its sweet, crisp texture; the crème brûlée with its sweet-bitter notes; the chocolate butter sand with rich, deep sweetness; and the original, light yet showcasing the gourmet butter's own flavor.

Pairing all this with a sip of the slightly bitter, richly nutty iced café latte rounded things out perfectly, balancing the sweetness of the desserts. It was a well-made, high-quality experience — living up fully to its reputation as one of the go-to Yeonnam-dong spots.

Tips before visiting Butter & Shelter Yeonnam, and the verdict

This popular Yeonnam-dong café runs on a tablet waitlist system for indoor seating. In particular, the handmade butter sands — the star menu — often sell out if you visit in the late afternoon, so if you want to try all the flavors, an early visit is strongly recommended. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace, but keep in mind that access there may be limited during rain, extreme heat, or other rough weather.

Between the upscale-tasting butter sands and the atmospheric space, I felt like I'd properly escaped the noise of daily life for a bit of real relaxation.
