Mokdong Korean BBQ with young radish kimchi noodles: Gamgol Yeontanjip
In short
Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong is a coal-briquette Korean BBQ restaurant in Mokdong, Yangcheon, Seoul, a 1–2 minute walk from Exit 2 of Omokgyo Station. On a return visit, a couple ordered pork belly, the summer seasonal yeolmu kimchi mari guksu (cold noodles in young radish kimchi broth) and finished with coal-grilled gochujang bulgogi, and they especially liked the self-serve aged kimchi and green onion kimchi bar and the signature basil sauce. Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong keeps the air conditioning strong, so grilling at the table stays comfortable even on hot days.

My husband and I love this place so much we've been to several Gamgol Yeontanjip branches. Let me walk you through it with photos.

Is it too hot to grill Korean BBQ in midsummer?
Honestly, just imagining grilling meat over a fire in this heat makes you feel stuffy. But the air conditioning at Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong, one of the best Korean BBQ spots in Mokdong, was so strong that even grilling right in front of the fire never felt hot or stuffy at all.

True to a top Mokdong BBQ spot, the meat menu comes down to four confident options. There are separate anju (drinking snack) and meal menus too, and most items are above average, so you really can't go wrong with any choice.

They also provide hygienic disposable aprons, and the staff were friendly, so the whole meal felt relaxed.
Table setting and the self-serve kimchi corner

The basic table setting was full of items that go well with grilled meat. Personally, I was really satisfied that Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong lets you eat as much aged kimchi and green onion kimchi as you want.

Scallion strips, perilla leaves, lettuce, and sliced garlic are also provided.

You can freely help yourself to extra side dishes at this self-serve corner. My husband and I love meat, and we also love the vegetables and kimchi that come with it, so we prefer places that have a self-serve bar.

Pork belly with the signature basil sauce
Among the meat menu at Gamgol Yeontanjip Mokdong, my husband and I love the pork belly and the gochujang bulgogi the most. But of course we had to start with pork belly — my soul food.

They don't grill the meat for you, but we're the type who feels awkward with too much hands-on service right beside us, so that was actually really comfortable haha. They did check on the grill plate periodically and swap it out when needed, so they do keep an eye on things.

We grilled a huge pile of kimchi too (didn't leave a scrap) and grilled the garlic and ate it all up neatly!

Bite into the golden-grilled pork belly and behind the crispy surface, savory juices spread softly. The savory fat and chewy lean meat blend together, and the more you chew, the more the clean, rich flavor of the meat itself comes through.

Wrapping it up with aged kimchi grilled in pork fat is truly delicious!

Add a touch of this restaurant's signature basil sauce, and the subtle basil aroma cleanly cuts through the richness, letting you enjoy a unique, refreshing flavor without feeling heavy.

Summer-only yeolmu kimchi noodles (young radish kimchi cold noodles)
While eating meat, I was looking at the menu to decide on a meal item when I noticed a new summer seasonal menu had appeared. I just had to order it haha. The crisp, well-fermented yeolmu kimchi (young radish kimchi) paired with a cold broth full of floating ice made me feel refreshed from the very first bite, all the way down to my chest.

The chewy boiled somyeon (thin wheat noodles) soaks up the red, clear broth beautifully, and the more you chew, the more the tangy, clean flavor of the yeolmu settles your palate. Thanks to its fresh, savory taste without any heaviness, it's the perfect seasonal dish to bring back your appetite in the sweltering summer.

Finishing with coal-grilled gochujang bulgogi
This might be the most beloved menu item at Gamgol Yeontanjip, one of the best Korean BBQ spots in Mokdong. Every table orders this dish as their final course without fail, and so did we.

The subtle smoky aroma unique to charcoal grilling hits your nose first, and the sweet-spicy gochujang marinade is soaked all the way into the meat. Grilled over just the right heat, the slightly charred edges are crispy while the inside stays moist — truly outstanding.
The gentle sweetness that follows the spiciness, in harmony with the subtle charcoal aroma, creates an addictive flavor that works just as well as a side dish for rice as it does with drinks.

Pile this charcoal gochujang bulgogi on top of rice and you could easily polish off two bowls. It's a must-order — remember that!
Dessert: a free green plum slushie

After filling up on meat, there's a plum slushie waiting to refresh your palate, and you can help yourself when paying at the counter. Holding a plum slushie on a hot day and taking a stroll around the Hyundai Department Store right after was small but definite happiness. We often visit here on our own dime too, and today I just wanted to share our favorite combination as a couple.
