Some days you just crave something warm. And one of the first things that comes to mind on those days is handmade mandu (Korean dumplings)!
The steam rising off freshly steamed dumplings, the chewy wrapper when you bite in, and a filling packed in with no gaps: it gives me a happy, satisfied feeling every single time.
This time I visited Arirang Gaeseong Son Mandu Siksa Branch (아리랑 개성손만두 식사점) and tried the Gaeseong steamed mandu in pork and kimchi. I understood right away why it's called a handmade mandu specialist.

I like mandu in general, so I went with high expectations, and from the very first dumpling I thought, "Specialist shops really are different." The basics were rock solid.

There are so many meal options these days, but I find few things as satisfying as a hearty Korean meal that doesn't feel heavy.

I especially thought it would be a good place to bring parents who like gentle-on-the-stomach food, and it left me with the feeling of having had a proper meal.

So if you're looking for a good Korean restaurant in Siksa-dong, I think it's worth a visit at least once!
How are the wrappers at Arirang Gaeseong Son Mandu?
The first thing that impressed me about the steamed mandu here was the wrapper.

True to handmade mandu, the wrapper was neither too thick nor too thin, with a lively chewy texture, and the more I chewed, the nuttier the flavor.

It's a texture you don't easily get from store-bought frozen mandu, so I felt the difference from the first bite. Best of all, the wrapper held the filling well, so I could enjoy it down to the last bite.
How does the Gaeseong steamed pork mandu taste? Juicy yet mild
The pork mandu was really packed full!! One bite and the mild flavor of the meat and its moist juices spread out, and thanks to the unaggressive seasoning, I could taste the ingredients as they are.

The more I chewed, the nuttier the meat got, and it went so well with the wrapper that I kept eating without feeling weighed down! With the filling so generous, I felt full the whole time, and I understood why it's rated as a handmade mandu specialist.
Is the Gaeseong steamed kimchi mandu just spicy?
The kimchi mandu at Arirang Gaeseong Son Mandu Siksa Branch was better than I expected too.

It's not a kimchi mandu that only pushes heat; it has a nice savory depth and a clean flavor, so my hand kept reaching for more.

The kimchi's crunch was still there, and it blended naturally with the meat, giving deep flavor without being harsh.
The mildness of the pork mandu and the savoriness of the kimchi mandu each have their own charm, and I kept thinking I was glad I ordered both.
Are steamed mandu enough for a Siksa-dong lunch?
People tend to think of mandu as a light snack, but the handmade mandu here are so well filled that they were seriously satisfying.

Warm, freshly steamed mandu made a hearty meal with nothing lacking, and they're easy on the stomach, so I thought anyone, of any age, could enjoy them without a second thought!

So it should suit office workers looking for a lunch spot in Siksa-dong, Ilsan, and families looking for a place to eat together.

I think what matters in good mandu is the basics, not fancy ingredients. The wrapper texture, the freshness of the filling, the right seasoning, the steaming time: if any one is off, satisfaction drops, and Arirang Gaeseong Son Mandu Siksa Branch really had these basics down.

I could feel the care in every bite, and I really got to experience the charm that only mandu shaped by hand have.
