Hongdae restaurant in Seoul for a chicken dinner with parents: Goobne
In short
Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is a large chicken restaurant in Hongdae, Seoul, sitting midway between Hongik University, Sangsu and Hapjeong stations, with bar seating on the first floor and a wide hall on the second. Three of us, including my parents, ordered the Gochu Basasak double portion (one and a half chickens) for 32,900 won and added Budweiser draft beer at a discounted 4,900 won, and the chicken came out straight from the fryer tasting ten times better than delivery. Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road works for group dinners too, and you can bring in a cake and eat it there.

If you're looking for a Hongdae chicken restaurant with a spacious hall that opens from lunchtime, I recommend Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road — great for group dinners.

Goobne Chicken is all about the Gochu Basasak! Coming out fresh right after frying, it's honestly ten times better than what you get from delivery. It's just really hot, though — forget the temperature of delivery chicken, you'll need to blow on it before eating.

Where is Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road, and what are the two floors like?
Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road is a great Hongdae chicken restaurant for a group dinner. It's a pretty large place — the first floor is set up like a bar, good for a drink or two, while the second floor is a spacious hall for sitting comfortably. We arrived so early that the second floor was still being cleaned.
It's located roughly halfway between Hongik University Station, Sangsu Station, and Hapjeong Station, so it's easy to reach from any direction.

Even though it's a chicken specialty shop, the first floor works as a cocktail bar too — every cocktail is 3,900 won.

Goobne's full menu — I only just noticed this was the English version. Since a lot of foreign visitors come here, there are both Korean and English menus.

The first floor has bar tables and bar chairs, great for a casual cocktail.
There's a restroom on the first floor with a sink right outside for washing your hands before going in.
Randomly, there's also a shower room with a toilet inside it — an unusual layout.
It's also a good spot for a casual glass of whiskey. There's even a solo-drinking set with a half Original chicken and butter garlic wedge fries.

What we ordered: Gochu Basasak double portion and 4,900-won Budweiser
I debated trying the green onion oil tteokbokki chicken that's been trending on SNS lately, but ended up going with Gochu Basasak.

Budweiser draft was on a discount promotion, so it was 4,900 won.
There's also a lineup of highballs and various beers.

Chicken prices at Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road
We ordered the Gochu Basasak as a double portion (one and a half chickens) — the perfect amount for three people.
- Gochu Basasak ₩22,900
- Goobne grilled drumstick ₩26,900
- Oven Basasak ₩21,900
- Volcano ₩22,900
- Galbi Cheonwang ₩22,900
- Yangnyeom Hero ₩22,900
- Namhae Garlic Basasak ₩23,900
- Half & half ₩22,900
- Original + Volcano half ₩22,900
- Original double ₩29,900
- Gochu Basasak double ₩32,900 (1.5 chickens)
Beyond chicken, there's also a whole range of pizzas, great for a chicken-and-pizza-and-beer combo.

There's as much pizza variety here as at a proper pizza place. Pasta too...

Cheese chibap (cheese fried rice), sotteok sotteok (rice cake and sausage skewers), chicken bake, wedge potatoes, baguette bowls — lots of good beer snack options.

I thought about ordering tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) too but held off — next time I definitely want to try it. Chicken and tteokbokki turns out to be a surprisingly great combo.
Why my parents loved the freshly fried Gochu Basasak
The Gochu Basasak double portion arrived. It was my parents' first time trying this chicken, and they said it was amazing. Honestly, I don't think there's anyone who could dislike Gochu Basasak — it might be the fried chicken most perfectly tuned to the Korean palate. Goobne means Gochu Basasak. Gochu Basasak means Goobne.

When Gochu Basasak first came out, I loved it so much I ate it constantly for a while! Having it again after some time, it's still delicious.
A legend that lives up to its reputation — Gochu Basasak.
If you're looking for the best-tasting chicken, go to a place where you can eat in the hall. It's on a completely different level. The taste of freshly fried chicken just can't be compared to delivery chicken.

It's just really hot, though. Grab it with your hand like you would delivery chicken and you're in trouble, haha. Seriously hot.

It's not deep-fried, so it's light on the inside, while the outside is deliciously spicy. Whoever invented this menu deserves a Nobel Prize for good taste.

Can you book Goobne Chicken Hongdae Red Road for group dinners and birthdays?
The chicken is delicious and the hall is big, so it's great for group dinners near Hongdae, and apparently you can bring in a cake — and even eat it there. Perfect for enjoying a cake comfortably during a birthday celebration.
