Pick-your-own saeu-sal and hwangjesal at a Yongin BBQ: Dongbaek

In short

Dongbaek Hanokjip Charcoal Grill Butcher Restaurant is a pick-your-own butcher BBQ restaurant on Eondong-ro in Giheung-gu, Yongin. At Dongbaek Hanokjip the writer picked saeu-sal (shrimp cut), sirloin and hwangjesal (emperor cut) from the butcher showcase, grilled all three over charcoal, and finished the meal with doenjang jjigae (soybean paste stew) and rice. All three cuts were tender rather than chewy, and the large private car park and roomy dining hall make Dongbaek Hanokjip an easy choice for family meals or group dinners.

Is parking easy? The large private car park behind Dongbaek Hanokjip

The first thing I loved when I got to Dongbaek Hanokjip was the parking. There's a spacious lot behind the building, so bringing a car wasn't a worry at all.

Taste matters a lot when I'm looking for a BBQ place, but honestly parking causes so much low-key stress too ㅠㅠ. When I visited, the lot had plenty of room, so I parked and walked straight into the restaurant.

Inside Dongbaek Hanokjip: seating, atmosphere and how to order

Walking into Dongbaek Hanokjip, the space felt spacious overall haha. There are quite a lot of tables, and the gaps between seats aren't cramped, so it looked comfortable even for a group visit!!

Instead of the usual chaotic, busy feel of a typical BBQ place, it was surprisingly tidy — a good first impression. Group seating is available too, so it seemed like a solid candidate if you're looking for a company dinner spot or a Yongin BBQ restaurant for a family meal. Picking your own beef at the butcher counter

The first thing that caught my eye at Dongbaek Hanokjip was the butcher counter. Inside the refrigerated showcase, appetizing cuts of meat were laid out in packs so you could look them over and choose.

Being able to check the cut and the marbling with your own eyes before deciding — that's the charm of a butcher restaurant haha!!

Meat packs displayed in the butcher showcase

There were so many cuts, from Korean beef (hanwoo) to Korean pork (handon), that I ended up browsing for a while. If you're a meat lover, standing in front of this showcase is basically a happy dilemma haha. We ended up picking saeu-sal, sirloin, and hwangjesal from all the options.

Picking cuts with different characteristics to compare while eating already got me excited. The meat on display was kept clean and well-managed overall, which made choosing fun too.

Side dishes and the self-serve bar

Once we sat down, a neat set of basic side dishes to go with the meat was brought out.

Basic side dishes served with the meat

No matter how good the meat is, if the side dishes or sauces are lacking, you can get sick of it fast. Here, everything from lettuce wraps to various banchan (side dishes) was good to eat alongside.

If any side dish ran low, you could just grab more from the self-serve bar, which I also liked haha.

Table set up before grilling begins

Grilling the beef over charcoal

Finally, the moment I'd been waiting for — time to eat the meat haha.

Meat placed on the charcoal grill plate

Once the charcoal was lit and the meat went onto the grill one piece at a time, even the sizzling sound was already delicious haha. Hearing that sizzle as the surface cooked and started to glisten with a light sheen of fat made it so hard to wait ㅠㅠ. Instead of overcooking it, we grilled each piece to our own taste, keeping the juices in, and ate it right away.

Saeu-sal (shrimp cut): the cut I looked forward to most

The cut I'd been most looking forward to was saeu-sal (shrimp cut).

Grilled saeu-sal showing its marbling

The marbling looked great even before cooking, so I already suspected it'd be delicious. After lightly grilling it and taking a bite, the texture was really tender and the savory flavor came through strongly. There was almost no chewiness at all — it just fell apart softly, so I kept reaching for more.

Along with the beef's distinctive savory aroma, the juices felt moist too, so personally I was very satisfied. If you like saeu-sal, definitely look for it when you're browsing the butcher counter!

Sirloin: good with nothing but a dip of salt

Next up, and impossible to skip — sirloin!

Sirloin cooking on the grill plate

Watching the sirloin turn golden brown on the grill was already a foul move on its own haha. Once it was cooked just right and I took a bite, the juices felt moist and the savory flavor was quite good too. It was plenty delicious just eating the meat on its own, without adding a bunch of extra sauces.

Dipped lightly in salt it was cleanly delicious, and it also went well with the side dishes. If you like the pure flavor of meat itself, sirloin is a menu you'd find satisfying without any complaints. Honestly the meat overall was so tender that I kept saying it was delicious the whole time haha.

Hwangjesal (emperor cut): the marinade makes it

After enjoying the saeu-sal and sirloin, we grilled the hwangjesal (emperor cut) too.

Marinated hwangjesal grilling over charcoal

Even though it's all meat, the texture and flavor differ a bit from cut to cut, which made picking a variety fun. The hwangjesal was also grilled golden brown on the grill, and it was tender and full of flavor — very satisfying. The seasoning is genuinely... good, honestly lol.

Adults would like this, but it's really the kind of flavor kids would love too..!! You have to try this one at the end..haha.

Lettuce wraps and side dishes enjoyed with the meat

Finishing with doenjang jjigae and rice

Even after filling up on meat, the Korean way to finish is always rice haha. So we added doenjang jjigae and rice too.

The doenjang jjigae came out bubbling away, and just looking at it, it was exactly the visual you crave after eating meat! It was savory and warm, and with a spoonful of rice followed by a spoonful of stew, it really felt like a proper finish. After eating rich, fatty meat, finishing with doenjang jjigae to clean the palate really is a great match!!

You keep saying you're full but end up eating all the rice anyway haha. If you're like me and feel like a BBQ meal isn't complete without a rice dish at the end, I recommend the doenjang jjigae and rice.

Is Dongbaek Hanokjip worth a visit? Final verdict

Visiting in person, the meat quality was great, but there were also a lot of things that made the whole experience convenient. The spacious parking lot was a clear plus, and the roomy dining room seemed good for anything from a family visit to a group gathering.

At the butcher counter you can pick exactly the cut you want, and the self-serve bar makes it easy to grab more side dishes when you run low. Above all, the saeu-sal, sirloin, and hwangjesal we ate that day were all satisfying. The meat wasn't chewy at all and just melted softly in the mouth, so as someone who loves meat, I ate very happily.

Bubbling doenjang jjigae with rice

I think Dongbaek Hanokjip Charcoal Grill Butcher Restaurant is a place I'll think of again whenever I'm craving good meat. There's fun in checking out and choosing the exact cut you want and grilling it right over charcoal, the meat quality was satisfying, and parking was easy too, so overall satisfaction was high.

In particular, the saeu-sal and sirloin had such a tender texture and savory aroma that I'd pick them again on a return visit. Adding the hwangjesal on top gave us the fun of trying a variety of cuts, and finishing with doenjang jjigae and rice was perfect. If you're looking for a good Yongin BBQ restaurant, or a comfortable spot in Yongin for a family meal, Dongbaek Hanokjip is worth a visit.
