Suwon restaurant for daechang hotpot and mentaiko gyudon: Horangigul

Horangigul Timevillas Suwon is a daechang (large intestine) hotpot restaurant on the 3rd floor of Timevillas Suwon in Suwon, Gyeonggi. Before shopping, the writer ordered daechang hotpot, a mentaiko mayo gyudon set and an egg okonomiyaki, and loved the sweet-and-salty mix of rich hotpot broth, savory daechang and soft okonomiyaki. Verdict: Horangigul is a good spot for a filling meal before or after shopping at Timevillas Suwon, pairing daechang hotpot with Japanese-style dishes.

After-dinner Mangpo Station dessert café with omija tea: Hongrad

Hongrad Mangpo Station Branch is a dessert café near Mangpo Station in Suwon, opened by Hongrad, a retro-style café from Haenggung-dong. After dinner with a friend, the writer ordered a summer latte, omija tea (five-flavor berry tea) and Basque cheesecake at Hongrad Mangpo Station Branch and was happy with the vintage interior and all three items. For dessert and a long chat after dinner near Mangpo Station, Hongrad Mangpo Station Branch is worth making a regular spot.

Sanbon Station Korean restaurant, weekend set with bunmoja: Deodolpan

Deodolpan Sanbon Branch (더돌판 산본점) is a stone-plate Korean restaurant on Sanbon Rodeo Street in Gunpo, Gyeonggi. The writer ordered the fire-grilled stone-plate squid and spicy pork stir-fry set for 2 with bunmoja (wide glass noodles) added, then scraped the self-serve fried rice included in the weekend set right down to the crispy scorched rice. With plump squid, pork free of any gamey smell and a stone plate that stays hot to the last bite, Deodolpan Sanbon Branch served one of the best Korean meals the writer has had lately.

Sunae Station Korean BBQ with Bobos Building parking: Jeju Monteurak

Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch is a Korean BBQ restaurant near Sunae Station in Bundang, Seongnam, Gyeonggi, where staff grill Jeju pork at your table. The writer drove there on a sunny day, parked at the Bobos Building lot and ate Jeju five-layer pork belly (ogyeopsal), Jeju special pork neck (teukmoksal) and kimchi stew, rating the pork better than famous black pork restaurants in Jeju itself. For easy-parking Korean BBQ or a group dinner near Sunae Station, Jeju Monteurak Bundang Sunae Branch is a good choice.

Jeong Jiyoung Coffee Roasters Lotte Premium Outlet Uiwang Branch is a café on the 3rd floor of Lotte Premium Outlet in Uiwang, Gyeonggi, opened by Jeong Jiyoung Coffee, a well-known name from Haenggung-dong in Suwon. If you pick just one, the not-too-sweet Coconut Latte is the clear favorite.

Yuseong pork belly BBQ: kimchi grilled in pork fat — Jeonju House

Jeonju House (전주하우스) is a Korean BBQ restaurant on Oncheon-ro in Yuseong, Daejeon, known for pork belly grilled on a cast-iron pot lid and for its kimchi stew. Two friends ordered 2 servings of pork belly and one earthenware pot of kimchi stew, grilled whole-leaf kimchi in the pork fat on the pot lid, and finished by mixing rice into the stew. At Jeonju House, the kimchi stew cuts the richness of the pot-lid pork belly, so the pairing stayed satisfying down to the last bite.

With live mackerel visible in the tank, Godeungeo Myeongpumi Doeda Suwon Branch is a top pick for a family meal out.

Ansan dessert café with pretzel meringue cookies: Flowerpot Cafe

Flowerpot Cafe Gojan Branch is a bakery café on Gwangdeok 2-ro in Danwon-gu, Ansan, Gyeonggi, known for its salt bread. On an afternoon visit the salt bread at Flowerpot Cafe had already sold out, so the order became injeolmi bingsu (shaved ice with roasted soybean powder and rice cake), pretzel meringue cookies, a chocolate brownie and an iced Americano, all rich and generous with ingredients. Go early for Flowerpot Cafe's salt bread; if dessert is all you want, the afternoon is fine.
