Yongin kalguksu restaurant with an hourglass timer: Yubok Kalguksu

Yubok Kalguksu Yongin Korean Folk Village Branch is a Korean restaurant in Bora-dong, Giheung-gu, Yongin, near the Korean Folk Village, specialising in pufferfish seafood kalguksu (hand-cut noodle soup) and flame-grilled jjukkumi (webfoot octopus). On a weekday visit at 12:30, the how-to sign above the kiosk explained everything: turn the hourglass to time the noodles, then work through the jjukkumi seafood chive pancake and barley rice mixed with jjukkumi. The jjukkumi set is only sold for two or more people, and the chive jjukkumi hot plate is dinner-only, so Yubok Kalguksu is worth visiting twice for lunch and dinner.

Songridan-gil ramen shop with chicken broth: Cocker Noodle Two

Cocker Noodle Two is a chicken-broth Korean ramen shop tucked into an alley off Songridan-gil in Songpa, Seoul. Arriving at 5:15pm on a weekday, just after break time, the writer ordered chicken drumstick ramen for 12,000 won, chicken chashu ramen for 10,000 won and dakjeon (pan-fried chicken) for 7,000 won, and every bowl of ramen came with a free egg rice ball. At Cocker Noodle Two, adding the crispy dakjeon on the side turned out to be the right call.
