Mullae clam shabu restaurant with hanok-style rooms: Palmi Jogae

In short

Palmi Jogae Kalguksu (팔미 조개칼국수) is a newly opened clam shabu-shabu and kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) restaurant in Mullae-dong, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. On a weekday evening the writer had the Palmi clam shabu kalguksu (18,900 won per person) as three courses: clam and meat shabu-shabu, kalguksu, then abalone innards porridge. The meal came with a welcome sangria slushie and a wasabi soy, chojang and chili sauce combo. With private rooms and an upscale hanok-style interior, Palmi Jogae Kalguksu is a solid pick for company dinners or family meals with parents.

It was one of those rare weekday dinners together! I was wondering what to eat when I heard there was a hot new place in Mullae, so here I am at Palmi Jogae Kalguksu (팔미 조개칼국수), a clam shabu kalguksu spot in Mullae🐚 Honest review ahead, follow along, follow Palmi~

Palmi Jogae Kalguksu hours, reservations and parking

Palmi Jogae Kalguksu is open daily 11:00-22:00, at 1 Dorim-ro 147-gil, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul, South Korea (1st floor). You can reserve, groups are welcome, and there are private rooms too🙆‍♀️ Parking, though, is not available.

Exterior and interior atmosphere

Like any hot new opening, the Mullae branch had congratulatory flower wreaths at the entrance🌸 The exterior is super clean and quietly serene!

Inside it feels like a hanok (traditional Korean house)! There's a courtyard, and the white and wood tones look totally upscale. The standard tables seat 4, and I loved how wide the spacing between tables is! There are rooms too, so it seems great for company dinners or family gatherings.

Basic setup: 3 sauces, barley tea and a sangria slushie

Once you sit down, Palmi Jogae Kalguksu sets out 3 sauces and barley tea first. Barley tea instead of plain bottled water? I'm already touched🥹

They also give you a sangria slushie🍒 as a welcome drink!

Sangria slushie machine next to the counter

See, that's the sangria slushie being made next to the counter. It's fresh and sweet, and being a slushie it's a perfect welcome drink for summer. Totally my taste!

In what order, and with which sauce, do you eat the clam shabu-shabu?

For the Palmi clam shabu kalguksu, I put in mussels, then vegetables, then abalone, then water dropwort (minari), and the best pairing was wasabi soy sauce for the meat and chili vinegar sauce (chogochujang) for the seafood. And then the star finally arrived! The size and look were insane, I was totally overwhelmed.

They said the lineup is made of seasonal clams and seafood from all over the country, so it can change with the season! Whenever I want seasonal seafood, I'm definitely going.

In goes the mussels, then the vegetables, then the abalone, then the water dropwort, all in one sweep. The hard clams and scallops can be eaten the moment they open their mouths, so it's practically real-time eating! The meat only gets a quick dip in and out. Wow.. what is this, why is it so good?! It really does get better the longer it boils.

The best sauce for the meat was the wasabi soy sauce, and for the seafood, chili vinegar sauce as always! The chili sauce is great for the occasional change-up dip😋

Second course: chewy kalguksu with kimchi

When you're almost done with the shabu-shabu, the owner brings the kalguksu along with kimchi. Of course, you need some carbs in there!

Chewy-noodle fans, heads up🙇‍♀️🙇‍♂️ Cook them just chewy, top with a piece of kimchi, and it's incredible❣️ The broth is totally rich, and the drinks go down so easily.

Can't skip the beer..! The beer glasses are custom-made, which makes them even prettier.

Finishing with abalone innards porridge

The last course at Palmi Jogae Kalguksu is abalone innards porridge rather than vegetable porridge, and the owner cooks it for you. Finished the kalguksu too?! Then the owner makes an ap-pear-ance to cook the abalone porridge!

The porridge at the end of shabu-shabu is usually a vegetable porridge with egg, but Palmi's is, wow, abalone innards porridge, so it was much more luxurious and rich😋 When the owner makes it, they check how the broth tastes right now and adjust the amount of broth accordingly. Total pro!!

Is Palmi Jogae Kalguksu good for company dinners and family gatherings?

I can't believe a shabu-shabu place this nice opened in hip Mullae! The moment I saw how it looked, I thought, ah, I have to bring my parents back here!! For company dinners and family gatherings, no questions asked, I recommend Palmi Jogae Kalguksu in Mullae.
