Aewol, Jeju brisket hangover soup before Aewol Alpaca: Aewol Eomma

In short

Aewol Eomma (애월엄마) is a haejangguk (Korean hangover soup) restaurant on Iljuseo-ro in Aewol-eup, Jeju City, open daily from 6am to 3pm. Before a 9am visit to Aewol Alpaca, the writer and her boyfriend ordered the Aewol Eomma haejangguk and the brisket haejangguk; the beef brisket was so plentiful it stood out more than the broth, and they finished by mixing rice into the spicy perilla-seed soup. Aewol Eomma is a good fit for anyone who wants a hearty early breakfast in Aewol before starting the day.

Where to eat early in Aewol before Aewol Alpaca?

Aewol Eomma (애월엄마) is a hangover soup restaurant in Aewol-eup, Jeju, open only from 6am to 3pm, which makes it a great spot for breakfast in Jeju. On this trip we had a 9am visit to Aewol Alpaca, and I went looking for a place that opened early so we could eat a proper breakfast first. That's how I found Aewol Eomma.

We get way more diligent than usual when we travel. Most days at home we skip breakfast, but on trips we always eat one so we can make the most of the day.

Aewol Eomma location and hours

Aewol Eomma is at 6699 Iljuseo-ro, Aewol-eup, Jeju-si, Jeju, South Korea, 50m west of Sineom Middle School. It's open daily from 06:00 to 15:00, and groups are welcome.

How is parking at Aewol Eomma?

Parking spaces in front of Aewol Eomma

There's no separate parking lot, so you park in front of the restaurant. It looked like room for about 4–5 cars.

What's on the Aewol Eomma menu?

Aewol Eomma menu, mostly haejangguk

The menu is mostly haejangguk (hangover soup). There were also dishes like soft tofu stew (sundubu) and beef radish soup, but overall most items suit a morning-after meal. If you had a few drinks in Jeju the night before, this is a good place to settle your stomach.

Home-style side dishes and fried eggs

After we ordered, the side dishes came out first, a tidy home-style spread! The tableware looks like something you'd use at home, which felt friendly, and it suited the name "Aewol Eomma" (Aewol Mom).

You get one fried egg per person, too. A fried egg on top of warm white rice is still the ultimate rice companion, haha.

The soup came in a lidded pot rather than a ttukbaegi (earthenware bowl).

How did the Aewol Eomma haejangguk and brisket haejangguk taste?

Two pots: Aewol Eomma haejangguk and brisket haejangguk
Haejangguk topped with plenty of brisket and bean sprouts

We ordered the Aewol Eomma haejangguk and the brisket haejangguk. What surprised me the moment I saw both pots was the amount of brisket (chadolbaegi). It was packed in so generously that the meat stood out more than the broth.

Loads of bean sprouts too~

Dipping the brisket in the chili soy sauce we each got brought out the savory flavor.

The broth was spicy yet nutty from the ground perilla seeds.

Inside there were also glass noodles and greens like ugeoji (dried cabbage leaves).

How is the Aewol Eomma haejangguk different from the brisket haejangguk?

Aewol Eomma haejangguk, similar in looks to the brisket haejangguk

On the surface the Aewol Eomma haejangguk looks similar to the brisket haejangguk, but

Looking at the ingredients inside the Aewol Eomma haejangguk

if you look inside, it also has a variety of offal.

It gives you the richness of brisket and the chewy texture of offal in one bowl, so I think anyone who likes haejangguk will be satisfied.

Finally, we mixed rice into the soup and didn't leave a drop. It filled us up, and the drinks from the night before went right down. And every time I scooped up a spoonful of rice, that much meat kept coming up with it!!

Squid jeotgal (salted fermented squid) came as a side too, and the squid was chewy with a really nice texture.

After finishing a bowl we were really full. My boyfriend enjoyed it so much that he said the Aewol Eomma soup was the most memorable haejangguk of this Jeju trip.

Is Aewol Eomma comfortable for families?

Spacious, bright interior of Aewol Eomma
Seating with a high chair at Aewol Eomma

For breakfast in Aewol, Aewol Eomma has a large dining room and even high chairs, so families can eat comfortably. Reading reviews before we went, it seemed the interior had been redone fairly recently, and maybe that's why the whole place felt clean and bright.

If you're looking for an early breakfast spot in Aewol, I recommend Aewol Eomma.
