This is Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap, where I went for dinner. As someone who loves cockles, the name alone made my mouth water.

Why we ordered the 4-person set for two

There were only two of us at Yeonhwa Maeul that day, but since we wanted to eat generously, we ordered the 4-person set, which looked like the popular menu item. Looking at the menu board, the set came with a discount, so it seemed like a fuller way to eat than ordering things separately.

What's the interior like at Yeonhwa Maeul?

The warm interior of Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap

The restaurant had a clean yet warm, cozy and comfortable atmosphere. That was the overall impression from the moment I walked in.

Dining hall with wood-tone tables and chairs

Wood-tone tables and chairs were neatly arranged, and the spacing between tables was generous enough to make the meal comfortable.

Rather than a flashily decorated place, it felt more like a modest, homey restaurant you could comfortably eat a meal at for years to come.

On one side, various photos and knickknacks were displayed, which made for a fun little browse. Overall, there were plenty of tables, so it looked like a good spot for family outings or dining with a group.

Here's what we ordered at Yeonhwa Maeul.

Neatly laid out basic banchan
Side dishes served with the cockle bibimbap
Table setting with wrap-friendly seaweed and perilla leaves
Clear seaweed soup served with the set
The generously laid out 4-person set spread

Basic banchan, plus seaweed, perilla leaves, and seaweed soup

The basic banchan (side dishes) arrived first, neatly set out, and not long after ordering, the dishes came out one by one. Since the cockle bibimbap and mulhoe were the mains, the accompanying side dishes made for a pretty full spread.

There was seaweed on hand and plenty of perilla leaves, so I could wrap the cockle bibimbap in various ways.

And as you can see in the photo, a clear seaweed soup came along too — not overpowering, clean-tasting, and a good match with either the spicy cockle bibimbap or the tangy mulhoe.

🐚 Cockle bibimbap (large): is the cockle portion generous?

The main event, finally!

Large cockle bibimbap served on a big plate

The large cockle bibimbap comes out on a big plate loaded with cockles and rice — looks like a lot even in photos, right? On one side, cockles well-coated in seasoning are piled high; on the other, the bibimbap is generously topped with seaweed flakes and sesame seeds.

With cockles piled on that generously, just looking at it gave me the feeling that I was going to eat well today. 😊

The cockles weren't buried under too much sauce — the texture of the cockles themselves came through, which made for fun chewing. The cockle's chewy, springy texture combined with the spicy-sweet seasoning really woke up my appetite when eaten with the rice!

Especially when I took a big spoonful of cockles and rice together, the savory flavor of the cockles wove through every grain of rice and kept me reaching for more.

Even better wrapped in perilla leaf and seaweed 😋

Instead of just eating the rice and cockles plain, I tried piling the cockle bibimbap onto a perilla leaf with some seaweed.

With the fragrant perilla leaf and the nutty seaweed added in, it became a whole different treat. The cockle's chewy texture, the rice's nuttiness, and the perilla leaf's fragrance all hit at once — my mouth felt completely full!

Piling on plenty of cockles like in the photo and taking a big bite gives you a real, proper mouthful of cockle bibimbap. Above all, I liked how generous the cockle portion was.

Rather than a cockle bibimbap where you're left with plain rice by the end, this one let us enjoy cockles together with the rice all the way through — which was great.

🥗 What does the mulhoe (2-person) taste like?

And the mulhoe (cold raw fish soup) that came alongside! A big bowl packed with fresh-looking seafood and vegetables — it looked refreshing just from the visual.

A bowl of mulhoe packed with seafood and vegetables

Translucent slices of raw fish and seafood sat with a mix of vegetables — onion, cabbage, lettuce — and a generous layer of spicy-tangy mulhoe seasoning underneath.

Mixing the ingredients well with the sauce brought out a tangy, spicy flavor that really woke up the palate.

If the cockle bibimbap is centered on savory, umami flavor, the mulhoe felt like it refreshed the palate with a tangy, cool taste — the combination of the two worked well.

Alternating bites of cockle bibimbap and mulhoe

Especially, taking a spoonful of mulhoe in between bites of cockle bibimbap felt like it reset my palate each time, so I kept alternating between the two. Eating the seafood and vegetables together also gave a nice mix of crunchy and chewy textures.

🍚 The cockle bibimbap and mulhoe combo — satisfying because it was so generous

The combination we ordered that day — large cockle bibimbap plus mulhoe for two — was truly generous. The cockle bibimbap was warm, nutty, and rich in umami, while the mulhoe was cold, tangy, and spicy — since the flavors went in different directions, eating them together never got tiresome.

On top of that, wrapping bites in seaweed or perilla leaf, and settling my palate with the seaweed soup in between, meant I could enjoy the spread in a lot of different ways. In particular, it was impressive how the cockle bibimbap didn't skimp on cockles at all.

💛 Overall thoughts on Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap

Yeonhwa Maeul Kkomak Bibimbap, visited for dinner. True to its name, this was a menu lineup that anyone who loves cockles would think of at least once.

A plate of cockle bibimbap piled high with cockles

The cockle bibimbap, served generously on a big plate, paired the cockles' chewy texture and savory sauce nicely with the rice, and wrapping it in perilla leaf and seaweed added a fragrant, nutty flavor that made every bite enjoyable.

A dinner spread of cockle bibimbap and mulhoe

Adding the mulhoe on top brought a tangy, spicy, and cool flavor that made the meal feel much richer than having just one dish. Above all, being able to enjoy the 86,000-won 4-person set for 72,000 won felt like a solid deal.

It was a good atmosphere to sit in front of a generously laid table with family or friends, chatting away and enjoying a relaxed dinner.

An evening where I got to enjoy the cockles' chewy texture, the nutty bibimbap, and the cool, tangy mulhoe all at once. On a day when you're craving a generous, homey Korean meal, this place seems like a great fit for anyone who loves cockle bibimbap. 🐚
