Camping sashimi to go with octopus and whelk, Jumunjin: Minja Hoetjip
In short
Minja Hoetjip (민자횟집) is a sashimi restaurant with a 60-year history inside Jumunjin Fish Market in Gangneung, Gangwon. During a Sokcho trip with one night of camping, the writer took away a small mixed sashimi platter from Minja Hoetjip. It had flounder, rockfish, sea bream and salmon, plus shrimp, abalone, whelk and boiled octopus, with wrap greens and chojang (sweet-spicy chili sauce) included. For sashimi at a campsite or your lodging, the Minja Hoetjip mixed sashimi takeout is a genuinely satisfying choice.

I spent one day of my Sokcho trip camping! When you travel to Sokcho you always end up eating raw fish at least once, but this time I wanted to do it a little differently.

Eating at a restaurant is great, but the weather was so nice that I figured it would taste even better at the campsite. So I picked up a small mixed sashimi set to go from Minja Hoetjip (민자횟집), inside Jumunjin Fish Market.

Minja Hoetjip has 60 years of history, has long been famous, and was even featured on KBS's "6 O'Clock My Hometown" (6시 내고향), so I went with high expectations, and it was even better than I hoped. One note: it is closed on the 2nd and 4th Mondays, so check before you go.
What is Minja Hoetjip in Jumunjin Fish Market like?
Minja Hoetjip is a sashimi restaurant on the live-fish alley inside Jumunjin Fish Market, and it sells snow crab, red crab and king crab as well as sashimi. The sign boasts, in big letters, that the owner holds a pufferfish cooking certificate and that its mulhoe (cold raw-fish soup) won first place on KBS's "6 O'Clock My Hometown".

Once you walk into Jumunjin Fish Market there are really a lot of live-fish sellers, but Minja Hoetjip was easy to find. I did some legwork comparing places, looking for somewhere famous, friendly, clean and good value, and that's how I ended up choosing Minja Hoetjip.

The sign, with its pufferfish cooking certificate and the KBS "6 O'Clock My Hometown" mulhoe first-place claim in big letters, catches your eye right away. They sell snow crab, red crab and king crab along with the sashimi, so it felt like a spot many tourists visit.

Above all, there were a lot of takeout customers, and the fish was sliced right on the spot, so you could feel how fresh it was.

What comes with a takeout mixed sashimi set at Minja Hoetjip?
When you take away the small mixed sashimi set at Minja Hoetjip, they pack lettuce and wrap greens, garlic, chili peppers, ssamjang and chojang, so there was almost nothing left to prepare myself. We ordered the small set to eat at the campsite, and the packing was quite careful. It's a really convenient setup for camping or eating at your accommodation!!
Sashimi tasted even better at the campsite

After picking up the order in Jumunjin we headed to the campsite, and seeing the clear sky and green grass, I thought we had really chosen well.

Sashimi indoors is nice, but eating it out in nature has a totally different mood.

The moment I spread the sashimi out on the table, the colors were just so pretty.

Types of fish in Minja Hoetjip's small mixed sashimi set, and how they tasted
The small mixed sashimi set had a nice variety: flounder, rockfish, sea bream and salmon. Instead of eating just one kind, we could alternate between several, which made it more satisfying.

The flounder was clean-tasting and chewy, and the rockfish got nuttier the more I chewed.

The sea bream had a firm texture that was fun to chew, and the salmon was soft and rich, a flavor anyone, young or old, would like.

Shrimp, abalone, whelk and boiled octopus on the side
The set isn't just sashimi; it also came with shrimp, abalone, whelk and boiled octopus, a variety of seafood, which made it even better.

Getting to taste a bit of everything meant I never got tired of it and enjoyed it to the very end.
Is the small mixed sashimi set enough for two?
The small set was not too little for two people. I assumed "small" would mean a small amount, but it was more generous than I expected. Great value!!

I put a slice of sashimi on a wrap leaf, added garlic and a chili pepper, took a bite, and I was really happy.

Add a cold drink and you get that relaxed feeling you can only get on a trip. Personally, if you plan to eat at a campsite or your accommodation, I'd strongly recommend getting it to go.
Why I recommend Minja Hoetjip for sashimi takeout in Jumunjin

If you're wondering where to get sashimi to go in Jumunjin, Minja Hoetjip was a very satisfying choice. Many people visiting Jumunjin must wonder where to buy their sashimi; as you'd expect from a place with such a long history, the fish was fresh and the takeout set was generously packed, so it was easy to enjoy.

The biggest plus was being able to taste several kinds of sashimi and a variety of seafood in one go. Above all, I think I'll remember for a long time that meal at the campsite, looking at green grass and a clear sky.
If you're planning a trip to Sokcho or Jumunjin, I really recommend stopping by Jumunjin Fish Market, picking up a mixed sashimi set and enjoying a meal out in nature. It will make your trip much more satisfying.
