Boryeong fish shop: sashimi and abalone for a trip home, Nokdo Susan
In short
Nokdo Susan (녹도수산) is a live-fish sashimi shop at stall 58 in Daecheon Port fish market in Boryeong, Chungnam. On her first visit to her parents' home in several months, the writer had Nokdo Susan pack one flounder, one rockfish and 4 abalone, and was also given spicy fish stew ingredients and a free sea squirt, all eaten alongside her mom's homemade side dishes. Nokdo Susan's takeout sashimi was fresh and generous, with leftovers even after three adults had eaten.

On the way to my parents' home: sashimi to go at Nokdo Susan, Daecheon Port

It had been a few months since I last visited my parents' home. Mom's cooking is great, of course, but I was already excited before leaving about the live sashimi.
Sashimi in Gumi and sashimi in Boryeong are worlds apart in both value and taste. At Nokdo Susan (녹도수산), a great sashimi spot at Daecheon Port, I had the seafood I wanted prepared on the spot and packed up generously.

Where is Nokdo Susan, and what are its hours?
Nokdo Susan is stall 58 inside Daecheon Port fish market. It is open daily 09:00-22:00 and closed on the second Tuesday of each month. It's about 10 minutes from the terminal, so the Daecheon Port fish market is the obvious place for takeout.
The market is packed with fish stalls, but this one has tanks that sparkle. Just remember number 58.

How does Nokdo Susan calculate prices?
Nokdo Susan uses clean, fixed pricing at the going rate. You can see the origin and weight labels, and once you pick a species, they put it in a basin, check the weight and tell you the price right away.
Fixed pricing means the prices are naturally fair, and the fish were swimming in the tank a moment ago, so freshness hardly needs saying.

One flounder, one rockfish, 4 abalone
This time I packed one flounder, one rockfish and 4 abalone. Before coming, I asked Mom which fish to get, and she said flounder and rockfish, so I got one of each.
They subtract the basket weight cleanly, check the weight and total it up. And you can watch the fish being sliced right inside.

It's squid season, so I considered a live squid, but I wanted abalone that day, so I went with 4 abalone. It's much better value than squid. Sea squirt, spoon worm, scallops, conch, shrimp and more: Nokdo Susan is a Daecheon Port sashimi spot with plenty of tasty seafood.

How does Nokdo Susan pack takeout?
Depending on the distance, Nokdo Susan packs everything carefully in an ice box with ice. They also prepared the stew ingredients neatly, and I got a free sea squirt that smelled of the sea.
While packing the stew ingredients, the owner asked if I needed stew seasoning, but my mom is a Boryeong native, so seasoning? Please 😂 Chatting with the owner made it really feel like I was back in my hometown.
How do the flounder and rockfish taste, and how big is the portion?
The flounder and rockfish sashimi at Nokdo Susan was neatly sliced to a good thickness, with a sweet flavor and great texture. Inland, even an extra-large order wouldn't give you this much sashimi, but when I visit home I can just pick it up at a Daecheon Port spot and eat to my heart's content.

The free sea squirt I found at home
The surprise I found at home 👀 I wasn't sure whether I'd heard them say they were adding sea squirt, but seeing it full of ocean aroma made me think of my husband. He loves sea squirt.
I had a few bites too, and my mom said she'd been craving sea squirt for a while, so we were touched by the thoughtful extra.

Crunchy abalone
Of course we had to eat the crunchy abalone too. I ordered it because the abalone tank looked clean, and it was indeed clean-tasting. Nutty sesame oil and whole sesame seeds on top made it delicious.
Abalone prices are good right now, so as a side, plus the owner's free sea squirt, it makes a full seafood platter.

Sashimi with Mom's side dishes
Sashimi with Mom's side dishes is something else. It went well with the kimchi she made a few days ago, and she'd prepared cabbage wraps for the sashimi, and that combination was amazing. Of course, this sashimi is also great with just chojang (spicy vinegar-chili sauce) and no sides at all.

The stew ingredients were packed well, clams included, but the sashimi was so generous for three adults that we quietly left the stew for my parents to enjoy the next day.
Daecheon Port fish market has so many sashimi shops that it's hard to decide where to go, so stop by friendly, tasty Nokdo Susan.
