Gyeongju mochi shop with a torched brûlée tart: Tareudang

In short

Tareudang is a takeout fresh fruit mochi shop on Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Gyeongbuk. The writer picked pineapple, peach yogurt and gold kiwi mochi plus a brûlée cheesecake tart torched to order at the counter, kept all four in the hotel fridge, and found each one big enough to cover a palm and surprisingly heavy. Of the four, the sweet, cold pineapple mochi was the clear winner.

Today I want to introduce a cute, delicious little snack shop I found while traveling in Gyeongju 🍓

While wandering Hwangnidang-gil in Gyeongju, Tareudang's fruit mochi caught my eye right away! They said whole juicy fresh fruit goes straight into the mochi, so I couldn't just walk past . . . Was the taste as satisfying as it looked? Here's my honest, detailed review 🫶🏻!

  • Hours: 11:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • Break time: None
  • Closed: None, open year-round!

They may close early if ingredients sell out, so definitely keep that in mind when visiting!!! Also, they said they'll be open as usual during Chuseok holiday! It seems they generally stay open through holidays!

Tareudang's orange tent seen from a distance

There's no signboard, but the bright orange tent is Tareudang! 🧡 The orange tent stands out even from a distance, so it's not hard to find!

Tareudang fresh fruit mochi standee sign

Out front there's also a standee sign for the fresh fruit mochi, so you'll immediately think "ah, this is the place!"

Seeing "fresh fruit mochi" written big on the sign got me extra extra excited!!!

Is there anywhere to sit at Tareudang?

Tareudang's takeout-only counter space

Tareudang doesn't really have an indoor space! It's a takeout-only counter selling just mochi, so you simply pick your mochi from the display and take it to go 🍓

It's just a counter space, but they matched the interior of the counter to the orange tent with orange accents, so the whole thing feels cohesive 🧡

I snapped a photo of the fruit mochi lined up on the counter too! 🍓🍇 They say each one is packed full of fruit, and just looking at them they seem heavy and dense!

Please also note the storage guidance! In hot summer they can spoil, so same-day refrigeration and same-day eating is recommended!

Honest take on four: pineapple, peach yogurt, gold kiwi and the brûlée tart

Four mochi boxed to go from Tareudang

I picked four things at Tareudang: pineapple, peach yogurt, gold kiwi, and brûlée cheesecake tart! 🍍🍑🥝🧀

Tareudang mochi packaging taken out from the hotel fridge

I tucked them carefully into the hotel fridge and finished my Gyeongju trip before pulling the Tareudang mochi back out! 🍓 The whole trip I kept worrying about those mochi sitting in the fridge . . .!

A heavy fruit mochi from Tareudang held in hand
Fresh fruit mochi from Tareudang wrapped in paper

Just as heavy and dense as they looked, they really were heavy once I picked them up! 😂 Looking at them I thought maybe it was just visual, but holding one in my hand I could feel how tightly packed the filling was!!!

Mochi wrapped once more in thin plastic under the paper

Peeling off the outer paper, inside there was another layer of thin plastic wrapped carefully around it! Thanks to that, the mochi stayed neat and didn't get squashed!

Fruit mochi large enough to cover a palm
Comparing the size of a Tareudang mochi in hand

I have larger-than-average hands for a woman, and it still nearly covered my whole palm! 😳 It was bigger than I expected!

Pineapple mochi (5,500 won) — the best of the four

This is the pineapple mochi I picked 🍍 Check out how packed it is with fruit when I cut it open! 👀

The moment I took a bite it was sweet and cool through and through! 🍍 Among everything I picked, the pineapple mochi was hands-down the winner 🥇💛

Gold kiwi mochi (5,500 won)

The gold kiwi was full of sweetness! 🥝 Since a whole gold kiwi goes in, juice came gushing out from the very first bite 🤭 The combo of sweet gold kiwi and chewy mochi was way more satisfying than I expected!

Peach yogurt mochi (7,000 won)

With the peach yogurt, the moment I took a bite I thought 'peach and yogurt really are an unbeatable combo!' 🍑🤍 They used a soft, juicy white peach rather than a firm one, so the soft, moist peach texture combined with the yogurt's tang felt extra rich!

Brûlée cheesecake tart (5,000 won), torched at the counter

And for some reason I got curious and picked the brûlée cheesecake tart too! 🧀✨

Tareudang's brûlée cheesecake tart
Torched, caramelized surface of the brûlée tart

They piled whipped cream generously on top of the cheesecake tart, sprinkled sugar over it, then torched it right there! 🔥 So the surface of the tart came out slightly caramelized.

Watching them torch it fresh in the shop only built up my anticipation even more . . .!

Cross-section of the dense cheesecake tart

A dense, chewy cheesecake tart with real bite! Rather than a tangy cheesecake, this one was sweet from start to finish 🧀🤍 The moment you bite in, it says "I'm dessert!" loud and clear!!!

Is Tareudang worth a stop in Gyeongju?

Overall, I was pretty satisfied with Tareudang's mochi! 🍓 Of everything I picked, pineapple mochi came in first, and I also loved the sweet gold kiwi and the soft white peach in the peach yogurt! On top of that, the brûlée cheesecake tart torched fresh in-store made this a very satisfying sweet snack stop during my Gyeongju trip!

If you're looking for a fun little takeout snack or fruit mochi to try in Gyeongju, it might be worth a visit 🧡
