A full table of half-and-half wood-fired jokbal at Jokbal Jipbaewon in Munheung-dong, Gwangju

This is a jokbal (pig's trotters) restaurant in Munheung-dong, Gwangju, and I went all out. When you're craving jokbal, you want somewhere that gives you not just chewy trotters but a full lineup of sides too — and Jokbal Jipbaewon Gwangju Munheung branch stood out because it serves jokbal roasted in a wood-fired oven instead of the usual boiled style, which made it a great pick for anyone wanting something a little different.

I ordered the half-and-half plate to get two flavors at once, plus makguksu (buckwheat noodles) and fried chicken gizzard, and then a complimentary sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) with ramen noodles showed up, plus a half old-style fried chicken from a review event — the table ended up seriously loaded. Here's the full story of my jokbal feast in Munheung-dong, Gwangju.

Where is Jokbal Jipbaewon Gwangju Munheung branch, and where do you park?

This Gwangju jokbal spot is located near Munheung 2-dong Community Center, and there's a public parking lot right nearby, so parking was easy.

The place is spacious with plenty of tables set up.

House-shaped popular seating area at Jokbal Jipbaewon

The cozy house-shaped seating area was the first to fill up — clearly the popular spot.

I think this was the first time I've seen a self-serve bar at a jokbal restaurant, and the service was great too.

The jokbal menu includes yuja hot jokbal, straw-fire jokbal, straw-fire garlic jokbal, straw-fire spicy jokbal, old-market jokbal, cold jokbal, and brown-rice fried jokbal, plus a bossam (boiled pork wrap) made from gabrisal (pork skirt). With so many jokbal varieties, you can also get a half-and-half plate for two flavors, or choose a jokbal-and-bossam set.

What we ordered at Jokbal Jipbaewon

  • Half-and-half plate (straw-fire jokbal & spicy wood-fired jokbal)
  • Makguksu (small) ₩5,000
  • Fried chicken gizzard ₩6,000
  • Draft beer ₩3,900 × 2

To fully conquer Jokbal Jipbaewon's signature jokbal, I ordered the half-and-half plate along with makguksu and fried gizzard as sides — and then, out of nowhere, a complimentary sundubu-jjigae with ramen noodles showed up! On top of that, I picked the half old-style fried chicken from the review event, and suddenly it was a full-on feast.

Straw-fire jokbal and spicy wood-fired jokbal on one plate

Half-and-half wood-fired jokbal on a two-section plate

The plate was split into two sections, one side holding straw-fire jokbal and the other spicy wood-fired jokbal, so I could enjoy both flavors at once — going from the mild straw-fire jokbal to the spicy version let me swing back and forth between two very different charms.

The straw-fire jokbal had a subtle smoky aroma that paired beautifully with the trotter's signature chewy texture,

while the spicy wood-fired jokbal came with a fiery sauce that really woke up the appetite.

Alternating bites of spicy and mild jokbal from the half-and-half plate

For groups like mine, with both spice-lovers and mild-food fans, this was a great way to satisfy everyone's taste at once.

Makguksu, the perfect partner for jokbal

Small-size makguksu served alongside the jokbal

Makguksu (buckwheat noodles) is a menu item you don't want to skip at a jokbal restaurant — eating the chewy jokbal and then having a bite of the tangy noodles cleans the palate and makes you reach right back for more jokbal. You can choose between small and regular sizes, and the price is very reasonable, making it a great side to order.

Chopsticks lifting a bite of tangy makguksu

It was especially good paired with the spicy wood-fired jokbal — the noodles' tanginess balanced the heat perfectly. Jokbal and makguksu really is a combo that's hard to get wrong.

Fried chicken gizzard, 6,000 won

Having a menu item with a totally different texture from the jokbal and noodles made the table feel even more abundant.

The crispy fried coating and the chewy texture of the chicken gizzard worked well together, and it was great for picking at between bites.

The free sundubu-jjigae and ramen noodles

Complimentary sundubu-jjigae served at the table

And then a totally unexpected service item: sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) with ramen noodles. Being able to eat jokbal alongside a warm bowl of soup made the meal feel that much heartier.

Ramen noodles added to the sundubu-jjigae

With ramen noodles added in, it worked as both an appetizer and a filling finish to the meal.

Half an old-style fried chicken from the review event

Half old-style fried chicken received from the review event

I picked the half old-style fried chicken among the review-event options,

and getting to enjoy old-style fried chicken on top of jokbal made for an even more satisfying spread when visiting with a group.

Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, this old-style chicken felt like a premium side you could also just order separately.

Draft beer at 3,900 won: jokbal and beer belong together

A 3,900 won glass of draft beer
Draft beer enjoyed alongside the wood-fired jokbal

At 3,900 won, the draft beer is an easy, no-pressure add-on. Coming to Jokbal Jipbaewon Gwangju Munheung branch, you absolutely have to do jokmaek (jokbal + beer)! A cold glass of beer with the smoky straw-fire jokbal, and another with the spicy wood-fired jokbal — jokbal and draft beer really is a combination that just works.
