Half-and-half jokbal & bossam family meal in Munheung-dong, Gwangju

In short

Jokbal Jipbaewon Gwangju Munheung branch is a Korean restaurant in Munheung-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju, serving wood-fired jokbal (pig's trotters) and lean bossam (boiled pork wraps) side by side on a half-and-half plate. The visit included the default sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew), boneless dakbal (chicken feet) earned through a Naver receipt review event, and a tuna rice ball for the kids. Hello everyone! 😎🔥 Your food-obsessed blogger is back on another restaurant hunt!

Neighbors — anyone else stay up at night unable to choose between jokbal (pig's trotters) and bossam (boiled pork wraps)? 🙋‍♀️ Just me?

This time I'm ditching my usual flat review style and cranking the energy way up, because I've got a story to tell about 'Jokbal Jipbaewon,' the spot that's blowing up for both lunch and late-night eats in Munheung-dong! 💥

What's the vibe like at Jokbal Jipbaewon Munheung branch?

The bright yellow sign grabs your eye from the entrance, and once inside, the place is huge and spotless! ✨

Every table has its own burner, plus sofa seating for a cozier meal, so this would be perfect for anyone looking for a restaurant in Munheung-dong, Gwangju for a family meal or a work dinner.

The wood-toned interior also makes for surprisingly good selfies, so of course we snapped a few before the food even arrived 📸 haha

The side dishes looked like a full-course hanjeongsik spread

The moment the side dishes were set down, I gasped… 😮 I thought I'd walked into a fancy hanjeongsik (Korean set-course) restaurant!

Pickled radish, pickled onion, garlic, salted shrimp, ssamjang (dipping sauce), a special sauce, and fresh lettuce wraps all came neatly arranged in a 9-compartment wooden tray — just looking at it made me feel spoiled!

Usually at jokbal places the sauce dishes are scattered everywhere and messy, but here everything was thoughtfully arranged 👏

Default sundubu-jjigae with ramyeon noodles and a raw egg

But the real legend here was this default sundubu-jjigae (soft tofu stew) — a spicy broth loaded with big, soft chunks of tofu, served as a complimentary side!

Add the ramyeon noodles, crack in the raw egg that comes on the tray, let it bubble away…? 🍲

Whoa… this broth is no joke 😭🔥 Spicy and savory with that ramyeon-seasoning depth plus soft tofu — one spoonful before the meat even arrived and I shouted 'this calls for soju' haha. Came here for jokbal in Munheung-dong, Gwangju and ended up falling for the stew instead!

You really have to see the video of the jokbal-and-bossam half-and-half set next to the bubbling sundubu-jjigae 🎥 The juices on the freshly served meat were glistening — pure art!

The order-time freebie event

We wanted to try a bit of everything, so we ordered the half-and-half set (jokbal + bossam)!

While waiting, I looked around and spotted a cute 'JOKBAL OFFICE' character mural, plus a big banner on the wall announcing an event.

Order bossam or jokbal and get a free choice of old-style fried chicken, boneless spicy dakbal, or hwangtae-gorbaengi-makguksu (dried pollack and whelk cold noodles)… is the owner even making money on this? 🥹👍

The boneless dakbal from the receipt review

We made sure to leave a Naver receipt review and scored ourselves some free boneless dakbal (chicken feet)! 🔥

Freebie menu items are usually small or thrown together, but here it came with scallions and sesame seeds sprinkled on top, giving off a proper smoky-spicy aroma — a real plate, not an afterthought!

Sweet, spicy, smoky, chewy boneless dakbal — it worked as the perfect cheat code to cut through the richness of the meat. If you love dakbal, make sure to leave that receipt review!

Jokbal + bossam half-and-half: the lean bossam is the real gem

And finally, the main dish: the jokbal + bossam half-and-half set! 🎉

Served neatly divided on a big gleaming brass bowl — the visual alone made my mouth water 🤤

First the jokbal: roasted in a 600-degree wood-fired oven, so the outside was crisp and the inside was moist and tender — incredible texture. Every bite bursts with the fragrance of medicinal herbs and clean, savory juices!

And this bossam is truly something special…!! 🥩✨ Normal bossam is usually more than half fat, so it often gets greasy or you end up trimming it off, right?

But Jokbal Jipbaewon's bossam is nothing like the usual style! It's packed generously with lean meat!

And yet it's never dry — clean-tasting and tender to chew. Anyone who normally avoids fatty bossam, or prefers lean meat, is going to love this 👏

Paired with fresh geotjeori kimchi

And what's the most important thing when eating bossam? Kimchi!! 🥬

They served crunchy, freshly made geotjeori (unfermented kimchi) with a sweet-spicy seasoning that had really soaked in — piling a piece onto lean bossam and wrapping it up was an incredible combo, I'm not kidding 😭

My mouth is watering all over again just writing about it 🤤

Fresh geotjeori kimchi served alongside bossam

Take a fresh lettuce leaf, add a thick slice of lean bossam, top with spicy kimchi, garlic, and ssamjang, and wrap it up into one big bite —

Zero greasiness, just clean pork flavor mingling with tangy kimchi in a bite you could eat endlessly 💚 Jokbal Jipbaewon didn't get its word-of-mouth reputation in Munheung-dong, Gwangju by accident!

Bringing kids? Try the tuna rice ball

Oh, and since we came with a kid, we also ordered a tuna rice ball just for them 🍙

It came piled so high with seaweed flakes, savory tuna, and mayo that you couldn't even see the rice underneath. We put on food gloves, shaped it into little balls, and the kid gobbled it right up!

Savory and salty, it's a perfect meal for kids on its own, and adults can happily pair it with spicy dakbal or a bowl of sundubu-jjigae broth too 👨‍👩‍👧
