Seokchon Lake gukbap after 20,000 steps: spicy hell soup, Boseung

Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch is a suyuk and sundae gukbap (boiled pork and Korean sausage rice soup) restaurant on Ogeum-ro in Songpa, Seoul, right in front of Seokchon Lake. After shopping in Jamsil, two friends shared an original suyuk gukbap, a spicy 'hell' suyuk gukbap and a solo special set (16,000 won per person), and the glass noodle sundae was the best of the three sundae types. Boseung Hoegwan Bangi Branch's hell gukbap is deliciously spicy, a dish worth coming back for on a stressful day.

Yukhoe Gongjakso Sejong University branch is a Korean pub on Gunja-ro in Gwangjin, Seoul, between Sejong University and Konkuk University, specializing in yukhoe (Korean beef tartare), beef sashimi and brazier-grilled yakiniku. Catching up with an old friend, the writer ordered the 49,900-won salmon yukhoe yakiniku set, added chicken skin skewers and takoyaki, and filled up on unlimited beef egg soup, self-made rice balls and highballs. Verdict: Yukhoe Gongjakso is a Konkuk-area bar where two friends can share a full spread without worrying about running out of drinking food.

Catch-up café near Konkuk Univ.: the last mango cake at Café Ohkam

Café Ohkam is a three-floor (1F–3F) dessert café near Konkuk Univ. Station in Gwangjin, Seoul. The writer caught up with a long-unseen friend over the café's last fresh mango cake (₩9,500) and a decaf iced Americano. The writer was happy with the half-cream, half-sponge cake, the different seating on each floor, Koko the cat, the phone chargers and the indoor restroom. Dongtan Station pho bar, half-day lunch, sweet potato rolls: Mibundang

Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch (미분당 동탄역점) is a pho restaurant on the first floor of the Dongtan Station Richian Arcade, near Dongtan Station in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi. On a half-day off, the writer waited about 10 minutes behind 5 groups at lunch, then ordered brisket-flank-tendon pho, brisket-flank pho and sweet potato cha gio (Vietnamese fried spring rolls), and was happy with the clear, clean broth and generous meat toppings. Mibundang Dongtan Station Branch suits a quiet solo meal or a light but filling lunch.

Café near Myojeoksa Valley in Namyangju with parents: Waltz & Dr. Mahn

High-ceiling Western restaurant by Bangi Station: gambas at Hope So

Hope So (홉쏘) is a two-floor Western restaurant with floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings near Bangi Station and Olympic Park in Songpa, Seoul. After a workout, the writer and a friend walked into Hope So with no wait around 4:30 pm on a weekday and ordered arugula pizza with homemade ricotta (25,000 won), gambas oil pasta (19,000 won), Hanmaek draft beer (5,000 won) and a glass of Chardonnay. Verdict: with its open view, clean restrooms and a weekday pasta-of-the-day deal, Hope So is highly recommended for both dates and group gatherings.

The writer took out Halls Gimbap's top evening seller, the double cheese egg gimbap, with a small dakgangjeong and extra Cheongyang chili peppers. The black-rice gimbap, heavy on thin egg omelet strips, was not overpowering, and the dakgangjeong was tender, almost like soy sauce chicken. Halls Gimbap is worth a try, extra Cheongyang chili and all, for gimbap fans who love spicy food.

Spicy gamjatang near Meokgol Station with extra sujebi: Wanttuk
