Post-water-play clam hot pot lunch in Yongun-dong, Daejeon: Widaehan
In short
Widaehan Jogae Jeongol is a clam hot pot and clam kalguksu (knife-cut noodle) restaurant on Daehak-ro in Yongun-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon. After a morning with the kids at the Yongsugol Children's Park water playground, the family ordered the clam hot pot for two, piled with scallops, mussels, abalone and whole squid alongside a cheese pot, then finished the broth with kalguksu noodles. The hot pot for two plus the noodle add-on came to under 50,000 won, which felt like strong value for the portion and the spread.

A day of water play with kids in summer really drains your energy, doesn't it? That day we did an opening run at the Yongsugol Children's Park water playground with the kids from the morning. By the time we came out from splashing around, both the kids and I were starving.

Since we'd already gotten wet, something with a hot, hearty broth sounded perfect. While searching for a good place nearby to eat something warm and filling, I found Widaehan Jogae Jeongol, a pretty famous restaurant in Yongun-dong, Daejeon, right around the corner.

On top of that, it's listed in the Blue Ribbon Survey, sometimes called Korea's Michelin Guide, so I got curious and took the kids straight there for lunch.

Widaehan Jogae Jeongol is close to Yongsugol Children's Park, so it's a good option for a post-water-play meal with kids, like we did.

The interior was roomier than I expected, so it looked good for a family meal or a bigger group. There were baby chairs, so it was easy to visit with an infant too. More than anything, it felt less like a spot for tourists and more like a neighborhood favorite in Yongun-dong, Daejeon that locals keep coming back to.

The seafood tanks were kept clean too, so I could enjoy the fresh clams with peace of mind.
The menu at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol and what we ordered
The menu at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol centers on clams — clam hot pot, clam samhap (three-way clam platter), and more. What we ordered that day was the clam hot pot for two.

The menu revolved around clam-based dishes like the hot pot and the clam samhap. You could add toppings like live octopus, live small octopus, and live abalone, which seemed like a great way to build stamina in summer.

What I ordered was the clam hot pot for two.

The moment the huge pot landed on the table, I thought, "Is this really just for two?" — it was that big. After waiting a bit and opening the lid, I was even more surprised.
Scallops and various other clams, mussels, abalone, and whole squid packed the pot from edge to edge. On top of that there was fish cake, vegetables, and even a cheese pot — just looking at it felt filling. I've had clam hot pot on beach trips plenty of times, but honestly this made me feel like I didn't even need to go to the coast.

The basic banchan included beondegi (silkworm pupae), fresh cabbage kimchi, salad, fried squid, and fried vegetables. As a beondegi fanatic, I was thrilled — I lost count of how many times I refilled at the self-serve bar haha.
How was the clam broth?
The broth at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol started off light and clean, then deepened as it kept simmering, with the clam stock growing richer. The clams themselves had no fishy smell at all, plump and meaty, and picking through them one by one was genuinely fun.

The most important thing in a clam hot pot has to be the freshness of the seafood and the broth, right? Cracking open each shell revealed plump meat with zero fishy smell, which made picking through them one by one really enjoyable.
Eating the abalone and squid alongside added variety, so it never got repetitive.

With so many clams packed in, the broth that came out of them was genuinely refreshing. At first it was clean and light, but the longer it simmered, the more the clam stock deepened into something richer. Maybe because we'd just come from water play, but the moment I had a spoonful of that hot broth, I thought, "Ah, I'm glad I came here."
Cheese with clams? It works better than you'd think
On one side of the Widaehan Jogae Jeongol hot pot sits a little cheese pot. As it kept warming alongside the hot pot, the cheese stayed stretchy right to the end.

There was one more fun detail at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol — that cheese pot sitting off to one side of the hot pot.
Since it kept warming alongside the hot pot, the cheese stayed stretchy until the very end. Topping the plump clam meat with a little cheese paired the clams' salty savoriness with the cheese's nuttiness surprisingly well.

There were also fish cake skewers in the pot, which I liked — it meant kids who aren't into clams still had something to pick at when we visited with them.
Finishing with kalguksu noodles, and what it cost
Once you've worked through the clams, definitely add the kalguksu noodles at Widaehan Jogae Jeongol. As of our visit, even with the noodle add-on, the two-person clam hot pot came to under ₩50,000.
Honestly, I'd say the real highlight of a clam hot pot is the kalguksu finish. Dropping the noodles into a broth that's already been infused with clams, abalone, and squid meant there was no need for a separate stock — it was rich and refreshing all at once.

The kalguksu noodles, a highlight at this Yongun-dong restaurant, soaked up the clam broth so well that a piece of kimchi on top was all you needed. Given that the two-person clam hot pot with noodle add-on came to under ₩50,000 as of my visit, the portion and composition made it quite satisfying value for money. I heard there's also a more affordable clam kalguksu lunch menu on its own, so next time I'd like to come back just for that.
A Daejeon clam hot pot near Woosong University that rivals Daecheon

Honestly, clam hot pot feels like something that should taste better near the coast. But Widaehan Jogae Jeongol, a favorite in Yongun-dong, Daejeon, packed in seafood at a scale hard to believe for a two-person order, and between the refreshing broth drawn from the clams and the kalguksu finish, we left really satisfied. Its spot on the Blue Ribbon Survey caught my eye, but in the end, what makes me want to come back is the taste and portions I experienced firsthand. If you're visiting Yongsugol Children's Park water playground with kids like we did, this makes a great follow-up meal. If you want a hearty spread of clam hot pot without heading all the way to the coast, this is a place worth visiting again.
